His CWGC details show him as having Glasgow connections rather than Falkirk. CWGC details were taken after the war though so aren't necessarily an indication of where the family came from or were living during the war.

Blimey, great minds. Three CWGC entries in as many minutes!
There is the Glasgow Roll of Honour online now which shows which company he worked for in lieu of an address:
BRYANS John Private Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders Rowan & Co. Engineers
Rowan & Co. seem to have been connected to the shipbuilding industry. I think this helps confirm that although he may have had Flakirk connections he was in Glasgow before the war.

Rowan & Co is probably David Rowan & Co of Elliot Street. That would tie in with the Anderston addresses. A lot of local men worked there. They were marine engine builders and boilermakers.
My late father worked for David Rowan & Co. They had a large engineering shed at the river end of Elliot Street opposite Betty's Bar, a notorious local hostelry.
Rowan's merged with Fairfield in 1963 to become Fairfield Rowan.

There is an entry for a John Bryan (note no S) in the Glasgow Evening Times Roll of Honour. Served in Argyl and Sutherland Highlanders. Published on 16 Nov 1915 (page 3). The index shows a date of death of 26 Nov 1915, which is obviously wrong.
I believe that the newspaper entry contained a photograph.
I hope this is your man, if so and you get the item, please post the photo on the forum.

Sorry to tell everyone but it is begining to look as if this isnt my huddys great grand father, having become firm friends with Scotlandspeople ive found John Bryans marriage entry, his parents are listed as Wm Henry Bryans, and Isabella Todd Bryans, his new wife is Euphenima Moodie which doesnt match the info about the John Bryans that you have all kindly dug up for me. moral of my story is, family stories are just that, stories. until you can prove other wise
P.S he was living in Boyd st Falkirk and was an ironworker. _________________ just looking to put leaves on the branches of my tree. |
