Winchburgh & Niddry War Memorial
Location: Memorial Gardens. Beside junction of Main Street (B9080) and Niddry Road (B8020).
OS Ref: NT 088 750
A relatively recent memorial for this community only dating from 2001. The design is quite different to other recently raised memorials.
The statue represents an early 19th Century Drummer Boy. The figure is quite small but is life-size for a boy.
Unfortunately the gardens in front of the memorial seem to be the local dog toilet and I had to tread carefully to take these photographs.
Note below how many extra names for both wars have been added since the original unveiling. It would be interesting to find out what the criteria for inclusion on this memorial is, and why so many were missed first time round.
Extra Great War panel
There's no obvious artist's mark on the sculpture but Alan Herriot from Howgate in Midlothian was the artist responsible for the Drummer Boy.
Note from this photograph how the cairn has been built around the base of the sculpture and it looks like his bare feet are standing on the cairn.
There used to be a website about the names on this memorial but it is offline at the moment.

The 'drummer boy' is very unusual. But I think I like it for what it is!
Would be very interesting to know the inspiration/thought behind it? |
