On the WW2 section of the Dumfries War Memorial is:
PATRICK FINDLEY, Merchant Navy S.S. Taberg.
So far I cannot find Patrick on any civil records (B,M or D) and all I have been able to find is that the Swedish cargo ship SS Taberg, in convoy from Glasgow to Huelva in southern Spain, was torpedoed by Italian submarine Gugliemo Marconi and sank west of Gibraltar on 6 June 1941.
I seem to remember a discussion on this forum that British authorities relied upon the owners of foreign vessels to inform them of the deaths of British crew members lost, but I can't find it!
Any thoughts, please. _________________ Ken |

It was the thread on the Raceland Ken. Because this ship was Swedish registered it is unlikely he will have been recorded by CWGC or SNWM. However I have seen foreign registered ships at Tower Hill. They were maybe under government charter or something?
He should be recorded somewhere in TNA but not where they record men lost on British merchant ships.
At least you have a name of a ship and a likely date of death to start with.
Thanks

I have done some research on ss TABERG with the Swedish authorities and I have Patrick Findley noted on the last crew list albeit his name is spelt incorrectly.
Of the 21 members of her crew all but 6 perished including 3 British seamen.
I have sent what I have to the CWGC. However, I can find nothing in the records regarding previous service in the MN which would not be a surprise as P. Findley had only just turned 16 and it was probably his first voyage.
He was born in Glasgow, 12.7.1925 - if anyone can supply any further information that would help me that would be great.
From my previous experience it is very difficult trying to get merchant seamen commemorated but we will wait and see what they say and I will update here.

What kind of proof does CWGC need? For instance John Gera Keough was on board of the SS Raceland. Samual Hickman a POW answered a letter of his mother ( Look at the address) John was mentioned on the crewlist of the SS Raceland ( see his address) Then his age fits in the birth certificate of John Keough.

Hi Jos,
Well, with regard to Patrick Findley, firstly, he is noted on the crew list as Fundley, not Findley. Also, there is no home address on the crew list from Sweden. I have no other MN records for him or the others and I have no record of his birth albeit I need to check further on that. The bottom line is if the CWGC are not satisfied or deem there is not enough information then they will not proceed.
I am awaiting reply from the CWGC before deciding if I can proceed with this.
Regards
