There are a wheen of names missing from the WW1 panels on the Auchinleck War Memorial, names that deserve to be on it, but have been overlooked. A few locals are trying to have the missing names added, hopefully before November next year.
Of the names that are on the WW1 panels, two are giving us problems:-
Private JOHN CASSIDY Labour Corps
and
Private FRANK SKILLEN Royal Scots Fusiliers.
We've found the numbers, ages, and other details, for all the other names on the WW1 panels, but we're struggling to find out about Pte.Cassidy and Pte.Skillen.
Francis Skillen appears in the 1911 census for Auchinleck. He's a 12 year old school boy living in Ballochmyle Rows, the son of Robert+Annie Skillen, and he was born in Denny, Stirlingshire.
And, in the local newspaper, (February,1915) a list of names was printed of those who had joined up. A Pte. F.Skillen of Ballochmyle Rows is on the list, but he's quoted as having joined the Royal Dublin Fusiliers, not the Royal Scots Fusiliers as is on the war Memorial.
If anyone knows any more about these two names, it would be great if you could let us know. Or, if anyone could suggest where else we could look for details we would be grateful.

For Pte. Frank Skillen Royal Scots Fusiliers
on the Auchinleck War Memorial
it should read
L/Cpl. FRANK McPAKE ROYAL DUBLIN FUSILIERS.
Francis McPake was born 9th.June,1898 in Dunipace, Stirlingshire.
His mother, Annie McPake, was unmarried.
In 1899 his mother married Robert Skillen, and around 1903 the family
moved to Ballochmyle Rows in Auchinleck.
Frank McPake was KNOWN AS Frank Skillen when he was growing up
in Ballochmyle Rows.
When he enlisted in September 1914, he enlisted under his legal name, Francis McPake.
17073 L/Cpl. Frank McPake Royal Dublin Fusiliers
died of wounds on 8th.July,1915.
He was buried in FERME-OLIVIER CEMETERY in Belgium. |
