This is a transcription of a memorial taken from "For Remembrance and in Honour of those who lost their Lives in the South African War 1899-1902" by Sir James Gildea, published in 1911. This is a book which documents Boer War memorials in both Britain and abroad. Many of them make reference to Scottish Regiments.
Due to the age of the book, and the fact that this is a transcription, this memorial may no longer exist or be in the location as posted. I put this information online for reference. If anyone can provide a photo of this memorial we would be eternally grateful.
| Quote: | Sacred to the memory of VERNON LEWIS, Brevet Major, Royal Scots Fusiliers, son of Capt. E Lewis of Darley Dene in this Parish, who was killed in action at the Relief of Ladysmith, when leading his men most gallantly at the storming of Pieter’s Hill 27th February 1900, aged 28.
In 1895 he took part in the operations with the Chitral Relief Force under Major General Sir Robert Low, for which he was commended in general orders and received the medal and clasp. In 1897 he was selected for service in the West African Frontier Force, employed on the Staff, mentioned in despatches, and awarded a Brevet Majority, Medal and clasp.
He was a most affectionate son, a loyal friend and a true soldier.

Well I hope this wasn't in St Paul's church in Addlestone as I have been informed that it burnt down 2 or 3 years ago. Currently trying to find out more and get a photo if the memorial survives (the church has been rebuilt).
This is not listed on UKNIWM

The memorial was badly damaged by a fire in the church which was reported at 02:30 on 12th December 2003 but thankfully it survived. I have a description of the fire and the thoughts of the keyholder if anyone wants me to send it.
Andy has also reported this memorial to UKNIWM to be included in their records.
