PARK'S NAME HONOURS LIFE OF YOUNG SOLDIER KILLED IN IRAQ
17 September 2007
The official naming of a north-east skatepark honouring the life of a young Aberdeen soldier who was killed in Iraq took place at the weekend.
Allan Douglas Park will be a memorial for Lance Corporal Allan Douglas, who was 22 when he was killed by a sniper while on patrol in the volatile province of Maysan, near the Iranian border last year.
Saturday's ceremony was attended by Mr Douglas's parents, Walter and Dianne, and representatives of the city council and the Royal Regiment of Scotland.
The Highlanders Association Pipe Band played at the ceremony.
As a child, Mr Douglas played on the grassy area between Quarry Road, Deansloch Crescent and Kettleshill Crescent.
The spot has recently benefited from improvements and the addition of the skatepark proved a popular move with local young people.
Last night, Mr Douglas's father said the naming of the park was a touching tribute to his son.
He added: "It was a very nice day and it was good to see so many people turn up. It is definitely something Allan would have appreciated as he played in the area as a child."
Speaking after Saturday's unveiling, Councillor Gordon Graham said naming the park after Mr Douglas was a "fitting way of remembering the Northfield lad".
He added: "There was a good turnout for the ceremony, but unfortunately the weather meant the skate demonstration couldn't go ahead. It was good to see so many people show up. I think this means a lot to Allan's family and it shows that the community cares." |
