1914 – 1918

PTE. PAT. A. P. D. BELL, 5/6th SCOTTISH RIFLES.
Patrick Alexander Pasley Dirom Bell – age 19 – Private (36801) 5th/6th Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles)
Pat had been employed on agricultural work and at Corsehill Quarry and enlisted when he was 18. He was buried in the Middle Farm Cemetery, Wytschaete, north of Messines but was re-interred in February 1920.
Born 1898 in Brydekirk, Dumfriesshire. Son of Andrew and Margaret Jane (Halliday) Bell of Mount Annan Lodge, Brydekirk.
Killed in Action on 3 November 1917 and buried in Messines Ridge British Cemetery, Belgium.
Also named on the Brydekirk War Memorial and Parish Church memorial.

PTE. W. J. BELL, 1/5th K.O.S.B.
William John Bell – age 25 – Private (5168) 5th Bn. King's Own Scottish Borderers.
William was a ploughman at Stobahill Farm near Lockerbie when he enlisted on 31 January 1916 but due to illness he was discharged from the army on 18 December 1916 and was awarded a Silver War Badge (489823) It appears that he suffered a sever head wound from a bomb (grenade) during his training. He died of gastric cattarrh at the family home of Little Millriggs.
Born 1892 in Hotton and Corrie, Dumfriesshire. (SNWM has Ecclefechan)
Son of Thomas and Agnes (Taylor) Bell of Little Millriggs, Boreland, Hotton and Corrie.
Died on 4 August 1918 and buried in Hutton Parish Churchyard, Dumfriesshire. (CWG)
Also named on the Hutton and Corrie Parish War Memorial in Boreland village.

PTE. ROBERT C. CAMPBELL, 11th A. & S. HDS.
Robert Campbell – age 23 – Private (S/19004) 11th Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
Robert was a farm servant at Mainhill, Ecclefechan when he enlisted as Private (24345) in the King's Own Scottish Borderers in February1916. He was mobilised in May and posted to the 3rd KOSB Works Company before being transferred to the 3rd A&SH on 30 December 1916. He joined the 6th (Pioneer) Battalion in France in June 1917 and then joined the 11th Battalion on 12 August June 1917. 10 days later he was killed.
Born 1893 in Dumfries. Son of Rachel Campbell of Burnside, Ecclefechan.
Missing in Action on 22 August 1917 and named on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.

LIEUT. RONALD COWAN, 6th H.L.I.
Ronald Cowan – age 19 – Lieutenant, 1/6th (City of Glasgow) Battalion, Highland Light Infantry.
He was educated at Annan Academy and afterwards for three years at Merchiston Castle School in Edinburgh. On leaving school he entered the office of Moore, Carson & Watson, chartered accountants, Glasgow, and had served one year of his apprenticeship. Ronald was commissioned in the HLI in August 1914 and landed with his battalion at Gallipoli on 3 July 1915.
Born 1896 in Hoddom. Son of Ronald Lindsay Cowan and Anne Margaret (Kennedy) Cowan of Hallguards, Ecclefechan.
Killed in Action on 13 July 1915 and buried in Lancashire Landing Cemetery, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the Annan Academy Memorial and on the Merchiston Castle School Memorial.

TPR. JOHN JARDINE CURRIE, SCOTTISH HORSE.
John Jardine Currie – age 23 – Private (56017) 256th Company, Machine Gun Corps.
John was employed at the Dalzell Steel Works in Motherwell, Lanarkshire when he enlisted as Trooper (5137) in the Scottish Horse Yeomanry in December 1914. He landed with the 1/1st Battalion at Gallipoli in September 1915. He then served in Egypt where in 1917 he transferred to the newly formed 26th Machine Gun Squadron (256th MGC) of the 2nd Battalion, Imperial Camel Corps. John was killed near Jaffa in Palestine at the Battle of Bald Hill.
Born 1894 in Hoddom. Son of John Jardine Currie and of Isabella Palmer (Laidlaw) Currie of Townfoot, Ecclefechan.
Killed in Action on 1 December 1917 and buried in Ramleh War Cemetery, Israel.
Also named on the Motherwell War Memorial, on the Dalzell Works memorial and on the Imperial Camel Corps memorial in London.

His brother James Laidlaw Currie was awarded a Distinguished Conduct Medal as Lance Sergeant (23439) 2nd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers. (London Gazette 26/11/1917)
23439 L./Sjt. J. L. Currie, K.O.S.B. (Ecclefechan). For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. “He rushed a "pill-box" singlehanded and rescued an N.C.O. who had been taken prisoner from four of the enemy, whom he killed. After all the officers and N.C.O.'s in the company had become casualties, he gathered a number of men together and led them forward to the objective against the enemy who were counterattacking. The following day he repelled two counter-attacks. He was ultimately wounded, but led his company through the barrages in good order.”

James died in Hoddom in 1965 age 68.

L.CPL. JAMES DONALDSON, 6th K.O.S.B.
James Donaldson – age 20 – Lance Corporal (22651) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
James was a joiner who had served his apprenticeship in Ecclefechan and who was working on Dornock, Dumfriesshire when he enlisted. James was wounded on 19 July and died in hospital in Rouen two weeks later.
Born 1896 in Hoddom. Son of James and Jeannie (Bell) Donaldson of Townfoot, Ecclefechan.
Died of Wounds on 2 August 1916 and buried in St. Sever Cemetery, Rouen, France.

PTE. JOSEPH EARL, BORDER REGIMENT.
Joseph Earl – age 21 – Private (24796) 1st Battalion, Border Regiment.
Joseph was a labourer at Hoddom Castle Gardens and was living at High Street, Ecclefechan when he enlisted in February 1916. He was mobilised in May and joined his battalion in France in January 1917. Joseph died of his wounds and was buried in Maison Rouge British Cemetery but was re-interred in 1919.
Born 1895 in Carlisle. Son of the late Jane Elizabeth (Armstrong) Earl and of John Earl of High Street, Ecclefechan. Husband of Margaret Ann Donohoe of 52 South John Street, Carlisle who he married in March 1916 in Carlisle.
Died of Wounds on 23 April 1917 and buried in Tilloy British Cemetery, Tilloy-les-Mofflaines, France.

TPR. R. S. GARTHWAITE, LANARKSHIRE YEOMANRY.
Robert Small Garthwaite – age 24 – Private (2267) 2/1st Lanarkshire Yeomanry.
Robert was injured by a horse while the regiment was at Coupar in Forfarshire. He underwent several operations but died in Craigleith Military Hospital in Edinburgh.
Born 1893 in Ecclefechan, Hoddom. Son of Thomas and Agnes (Grierson) Garthwaite of High Street and of Sinclarburn, Ecclefechan.
Died on Service on 25 August 1916 and buried in Hoddom New Parish Churchyard in Ecclefechan. (CWG)
