Folks,
For the most part I have recently been concentrating on identifying all casualties from the civic/public/parish war memorials in Perthshire, including those historically in the county but now covered by Stirling Council area (Dunblane, Killin, Callander etc.). I have broken down the county into 'smaller' areas for searching purposes. I know everyone is busy but could you have a look with 'fresh eyes' and come up with any suggestions please. I'll start with the missing from N. Perthshire;
CAMPBELL; ROBERT PVT. BLACK WATCH ABERFELDY
ROBERTSON; JAMES PVT. BLACK WATCH MOULIN
ROBERTSON; J STKR. ROYAL NAVY STRATHTAY
MORRISON; ROBERT PVT. SOUTH AFRICANS LOGIERAIT
CUMMING; HECTOR PVT. K.O.S.B'S BLAIR ATHOLL
PINKNEY; ARTHUR A.B. R.N.V.R. KENMORE
BLAIR; WILLIAM L-CPL. BLACK WATCH BLAIR ATHOLL |

NOTE
There are 325 casualties in the North Perthshire 'folder' - 318 identified. |

CUMMING; HECTOR PVT. K.O.S.B'S BLAIR ATHOLL
Since the following soldier is the only Hector Cumming(s) found on the MICs, I would go with 9532/201713 Hector Cummings. I have the medal roll page which states he served overseas with the 1/5th Battalion.
His MIC also shows that he was discharged and awarded a Silver War Badge. Reference your earlier query about SWB 'cards' - these aren't cards, rather they are entries in volumes of medal rolls (about a dozen men to a page) - I have the page for 201713 Hector Cummings:
201713; Pte; Cummings; Hector; K.O.S.B.s; SWB badge no. 255397; enlisted 27-8-1915; discharged 5-11-1917; Para 393 xvi KR, Wounds; age 28 yrs, 2months; Overseas service - Yes.
I also have the casualty list published in The Scotsman, 21st May 1917, naming him as wounded, almost certainly at 2nd Battle of Gaza, 19th April 1917. Only downside is that the address for next-of-kin is Portobello!

Further, a check on ScotlandsPeople shows Hector Cummings, age 29, died in Edinburgh in 1919.
Just need to get a connection with Blair Atholl.

Stewart,
Thanks for that. I had not considered the man you suggest. I immediately downloaded his DC - he died from influenza at the City Hospital, Edinburgh, 22 Jan., 1919.
He was a General Labourer (Army Pensioer). I'd hoped to see some connection to the railways as a few of the 'outwith' lads in this area had worked with the Highland Railway Co. Again there are one or two lads I've found with connections to Edinburgh + the Caledonian Railway Co. at Edinburgh. Will try and source a death notice. Maybe the 1911 census may help.

Stuart has given a strong candidate for Hector Cumming(s). Robert Morrison to be followed up through S.A. records. Mike Haigh has, I believe, found Charles ARTHUR Pinkney. This leaves
CAMPBELL; ROBERT PVT. BLACK WATCH ABERFELDY
ROBERTSON; JAMES PVT. BLACK WATCH MOULIN
ROBERTSON; J STKR. ROYAL NAVY STRATHTAY
BLAIR; WILLIAM L-CPL. BLACK WATCH BLAIR ATHOLL |

Hi Mark,
There is a marriage for Hector Cummings, Leith, Edinburgh in 1915 - he enlisted that year. Maybe it would be worth downloading the certificate to check for his occupation - perhaps show a railway connection?
Perhaps also worth checking out Edinburgh/Perthshire papers for April/May 1917 for a report of his wounding at Gaza - British Library shows there was the Leith Observer published from 1896 to 1924.

Almost seven years ago I posted regarding the 'Missing 7'.
I am reprising Hector Cumming(s) - who was identified in this thread by Stewartry and whom I now firmly believe is the right man.
A few years ago I found a 1915 RoH in Blair Atholl Museum and looking over it again the very last name listed is Hector Cumming, Borenich, Strathtummel, K.O.S.B.
Borenich is a quoad sacra parish of Atholl.
A revised search of the 1911 census showed Hector Cummings, aged 21, a ploughman at Borenich, Tenandry, Blair Atholl, born Edinburgh.
Only one Hector Cummings is born in Edinburgh during the correct time period (1899) son of John Cummings (Fishmonger) and Annie Leadbetter.
Hector Cummings married in 1915 by now residing in Portobello and described as a ploughman (Private 3rd Btn., K.O.S.B.).
How a man born in Edinburgh ended up as a ploughman and working for a time at Borenich, Strathtummel I will never know!!

I have checked the "Royal Naval Other Ranks Deaths 1914–1919" CD for the two Royal Navy men in your missing list, and there are no matches for either of them.
There are some J Robertsons which may be possibles but there is insufficient extra info to make a connection to one of them. |

Great work tracking down this man. What a lot of detective work! I think the movement of farm workers across Scotland was quite common in Edwardian times. Highlands to Lowlands and Lowlands to Highlands. I suppose people would go where the work was no matter where it was.

Further to
ROBERTSON; J STKR. ROYAL NAVY, STRATHTAY
When I transcribed the unveiling report for the Strathtay United Free Church War Memorial (dedicated Sunday 24th July, 1921), it stated:
"John Robertson, who served in the Navy, and who afterwards died as the result of illness contracted during the period of his service".
National Archives list four but the only possible I can see is:
John Robertson, K24850, born Perth, Scotland 30th June, 1897. He was discharged on 31st October, 1916 (says 'ashore' I think) being medically unfit.
Pic below containes information from the Service Record. Not sure if the dates in the remarks section are important clues.
