A new memorial plaque, commemorating the death of Lt George Cyril Olguin Paton, 9 Bn RSF, on 20 June 1916, will be unveiled at Port Laing Beach, North Queensferry at 2pm on 20 June 2016. Representatives of 2SCOTS, NQ Primary School and other interested parties will be attending and there will subsequently be an opportunity to visit his (now restored) grave at Hope Street Cemetery, Inverkeithing. I will post images in the appropriate section of the project after the ceremony.
Lt Paton was born on 13 September 1894 in the Belgrano district of Beunos Aires, Argentina and was one of over 5,000 men from that country, who made their own way to the UK to serve in the British forces during WW1. On day of his death he was in charge of grenade practice at Port Laing, when a grenade landed near a group of men. He called a warning, ran forward in an attempt to get rid of the grenade, it exploded and he was killed, BUT HE SAVED HIS MEN. _________________ Researching North Queensferry War Memorial |
