This form gives the person's service number, name and Corps at the top.
The Corps is given as N.R. Guard Company - any idea what this this?
The person also states he served 16 years in Border Regiment - what one is this?
Thanks. |

Best Guess
Lots of detail via http://www.1914-1918.net/reserve.htm
2. National Reserve
The National Reserve was a register maintained by Territorial Force County Associations. Registration was voluntary but complex rules of eligibility applied. Its strength as at 1 October 1913 was 215,000 of all ranks.
In October 1914 the National Reserve was formed into Protection Companies, which were attached to existing TF battalions, for the guarding of railways and other vulnerable points in Britain.

Apologies for delay in replying. Thanks for information. It clarifies his WW! service. His 16 years in Border Regiment is posing a problem. It can't have been 16 consecutive years as I have him elsewhere doing various occupations. Suspect it was x years in regiment and y years in reserves. One source says he joined in 1877 but Border Reg came into being 1881.
Will soldier on, in manner of speaking! |

Thanks again Ken. Besides him joining the National Reserve in 1914. I have now found another short service attestation! This is dated 12 April 1900 when he is age 38. He joins for 1 year says he was in Border regiment and left as time expired and is not in any reserves. He is in Edinburgh and joining Royal Reserve Regiment. Anybody know where I can get information on this and is this connected to Boer War in any way? |

If a person was in the Royal Reserve Regiment in 1900 for 1 year what exactly are his duties? Is he full time in the forces or is it a case of turning up for training say 1 night a week?
Somebody posted on GWF "The infantry regiments were consolidated into the Royal Garrison Regiment as the manpower crisis eased and this Regiment itself was eventually stood down". Again was this a kind of Volunteers regiment forerunner of TA? |
