This stucco wall panel is above the door of the church. My Latin is virtually nil but I spotted the word "militiae" so took a photo. On return home I searched the internet and found that Sir John Snell was born near Colmonell in 1629, the son of a blacksmith. He fought for the Royalists in the English Civil War, including the Battle of Worcester. He made pots of money and left money in his will to pay for an annual scholarship that allows a Glsgow University graduate to undertake postgraduate study at Baliol College, Oxford. To this day, dinners are held in honour of his foundation. For more information see: http://www.2pins.org.uk/2012/10/sir-john-snell/
When I am next in the area I will hunt out the large monument to him at Pinwherry.

I see that one of the men funded was Robert Blair VC (13 March 1834 – 28 March 1859) - so more than enough military connections for me _________________ Ken |

WMR 80491.
Probably the first report entirely in Latin!
I would have walked straight past, because of being Latin |
