|
|
The Stirling roll of honour has 703 names but I think some might be duplicates. Has anyone come across two names for the same man on a memorial? The names I THINK are duplicates are:
1. Lyden, John, Pte, Royal Scots, 75 Baker Street and Leyden, John; CWGC has John Leyden, Royal Scots 2nd Bn, died 16/07/1916; son of Mary Healy (formerly Leyden), of 75, Baker St., Stirling, and the late James Healy (stepfather) and I can’t find John Lyden
2. McGregor, Henry, Pte., Black Watch, 16 Lower Castlehill and McGrigor, H., Pte, Black Watch; CWGC has McGregor, H, Black Watch 9th Battalion, S/9287 killed on 29/4/1916; Stirling Observer 9 May 16 has Death notice: McGregor: killed during gas attack on 29th April, Private Henry McGregor, Black Watch; age 21; son of Peter McGregor, 16 Lower Castlehill, Stirling; the Observer also has Private H McGrigor (9287) Black Watch – killed; I can’t find a McGrigor – is it just the accent!!
3. Stack, John and Stark, John, Pte, 7th H.L.I; I can’t find John Stack but CWGC has a Stark, John, 1920 Highland Light Infantry 7th Battalion, killed 12/09/1915 (no obvious link to Stirling and his medal card has “14-15 star engraved J Starke!”)
4. There are also two of Alex Drysdale, one 1st Black Watch, 40 Spittal Street, the other Private, Black Watch – I haven’t found either yet! I suppose it is possible they could be father and son.
Any comments/opinions/solutions(!!) welcome. |

The memorial had two names George Low or George Lowe Black Watch or Scottish Horse and then took drastic action just took a great gouge out of the memorial to remove the name. _________________ Researching WWI info from Aberdeenshire, Banffshire, Kincardineshire & Morayshire. |
