Ballantrae - Kyle & Carrick District
OS Ref No. NX 086 823

The Ballantrae war memorial is a grey granite celtic cross with wheel-head and bosses set on a low tapering shaft which rests on a large square pedestal. The commemoration and names of the dead are set in lead lettering on the faces of the pedestal. The names of the WWI dead are listed according to the year of death, including names up until 1920.
The monument stands in a rock garden on the slopes below the castle overlooking the main road at the junction with the Stinchar Valley Road at the southern edge of the village.

Above - a sizable chunk of granite has been broken off at the base of the cross shaft at the back.

Above - a picture taken in the summer.

This memorial can be quite photogenic in a good light. I was particularly concerned at the damage to the cross.

WW1
1914
Pte. Robert Wilson, C.H.

(Glasgow Herald 2nd of April 1915)
"Information has been received from comrades that Private Robert Wilson, D Company, 1st Cameron Highlanders, who has been missing since September 14, has been killed in an improvised hospital which has been blown up by the enemy's shells. Wilson served eight years with the colours, and afterwards was with the Reserve. He took part in the Mons retreat. He was 33 years of age, a native of Girvan, and employed on the postal staff at Ballantrae, where his wife and two children reside."
