Any one run across Lt Peter Alistair McDowall (256532) 1st Bn. Tyneside Scottish, Black Watch. KIA 25 June 1944, on a memorial.
SNWM has him born in Chile and the Army RoH agrees and has his residence at enlistment as East Lothian.
His father James died in Concepcion, Chile in 1957.
These details are from the McDowall family grave in Rerrick Parish Churchyard, Kirkcudbrightshire but he does not seem to be listed on any memorial in D&G. _________________ Ken |

I am sure you tried this Ken, but for the benefit of anyone else reading this thread, the local paper which covers Rerrick Parish (Dundrennan Village) for 1944 is the Galloway News. Local papers gave little to no coverage of war deaths in WW2 but he is also not mentioned in 'Deaths' or 'In Memoriam' for the two months following his death.

You are correct Paul - he is mention in the Galloway News 22/7/1944 p.4g but it doesn't say much more than that we already have.
The gravestone inscription is at http://www.kirkyards.co.uk/rerrick/rerrick.asp?Inscription=mcdowall
I've been in touch with John Dixon by e-mail. _________________ Ken |

By one of those "odd" coincidences there is another man in this churchyard who also was born in Valpariaso, Chile - and he too is not on any local memorial.
GEORGE CHARLES SYMINTON – age 19 – Second Lieutenant: 3rd attached to 12th Battalion, Royal Sussex Regiment.
George had been a member of the OTC at school in Sussex and at Downing College, Cambridge and was commissioned in May 1917. He arrived at the front on 25 June and was fatally wounded on 31 July at Ypres. (Source:SRoH and Du Ruvigny's Roll of Honour)
Born 1898 in Valparaiso, Chile. (Source:Du Ruvigny's Roll of Honour)
Son of the late Thomas Syminton (died 1907 in Lima, Peru) and of Alice Maud Mary (Cook) of 24 Lexham Gardens, London.
Grandson of George Cowan Syminton of Kirkcarswell, Rerrick.

Died of wounds – 1 August 1917.
Commonwealth War Grave – Dozinghem Military Cemetery, Belgium. _________________ Ken |
