East United Free Church, Dunblane.

(Glasgow Herald 8th of May 1922)
"In the East United Free Church, Dunblane, yesterday a bronze tablet to the memory of the 16 men and 1 woman belonging to the congregation who died on service was unveiled and dedicated by the minister, the Rev. Hugh Stevenson M.B.A. M.A."

Re. Buchanan

The church was destroyed by fire in 1938 but rebuilt in 1939. It does have a "beautiful illuminated Roll of Honour in the vestibule" and some laid up colours of the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders. I ran out of time on a short break to make enquiries for gaining access. There is also a Memorial Hall next to the school but I do not know if this is war related. The churchyard, although small, has quite a number of CWGC headsones.

Recently the powers that be in the NHS dinged doon the old Falkirk & District Royal Infirmary [where I was born in 1949--damnatio memoriae, or what?].
At the front of the building were gates which contained the memorial to the dead from my old school, Falkirk High, from the Great War. The gates still recorded that they were a memorial but there were gaps where the panels containing the lists of the dead were, I assume, recorded. Had they been moved elsewhere? I can't recall them being in the school [now also dinged doon.]

There's a statue of the Duke of Wellington in Falkirk, been there for 160 years, just had his head kocked off though.

Police are investigating an attack on a historic statue of the Duke of Wellington in Falkirk’s Newmarket Street.

The head of the famous ‘Iron Duke’ was smashed off by vandals last Friday night.

The memorial to the soldier, who defeated Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815, has been an historical landmark in the town for 160 years.

His head has now been retrieved by Falkirk Council. A spokesman said: “We will have a look at the damage and see what can be done to repair it as part of our on-going heritage work in the town centre.”

A police spokesman said: “We are appealing to anyone with information relating to this incident to contact us on 101.”

The statue, by Victorian sculptor Robert Forrest, was commissioned by the Burghers of Lanark but on completion they refused to accept it and Falkirk Provost Robert Adam - with the support of James Russel of Arnotdale and public money - bought it for £70.

It originally stood by The Steeple in Falkirk High Street but was moved to Newmarket Street, ironically to protect it from New Year revellers, in 1905.

Bridge of Allan`s Activities in the Great War 1914-1919

This book indicates that memorials were erected in the following places:

Chalmers United Free Church- fumed oak with 12 names
Bridge of Allan Parish Church-curved brass plate round a pillar-24 names
Logie Cricket Club-ROH with pics of the 14 who served(3 died)-presented to the 14 or their kin

Can anyone locally find them?

NB.
Recent research has shown that Assistant Cook Sharp is buried here. The Commission is in the process of producing a headstone to commemorate her.

I'm not sure of the timing of the above note.
