Adam has pointed out to me that the forum is six months old today.
So....a quick word of congratulations to everyone who has contributed in whatever way to the forum so far. Let's make the next six months, and the next six after that, (and so on!) even more of a success.
Here, have a slice of cake:

Well done Boss: without your efforts little of what has been promulgated in the last 6 months would be 'out there'.
You deserve the big slice - and you can lick the knife!

I thought it was Oor Wullie!
We’re only six months old but we’ve already had over 6,000 posts and have over 140 members. I’d say that’s pretty good going for a forum dedicated to such a specific subject.
David took the bold step of trying something new - posting photos on a forum rather than adding them to a website. It could have sat ignored on the web like some war memorial websites but instead the result has been staggering.
I think the beauty of this forum compared to a website is you can see the results straight away. You don’t have to e-mail the material to someone else and wait to see it downloaded. It also means anyone can add snippets of information to any thread. Who would have known before this forum started how far and wide the men and women of Blairgowrie had spread across Scotland for example.
We have had hundreds of memorials from all over Scotland and the world photographed and transcribed and posted on the forum. In three areas of Scotland (Borders, Dumfries and Galloway, and Perth and Kinross) a fantastic effort by a dedicated band of posters means that nearly all of the civic memorials in those areas have already been posted on here.
Even if the next six months only produce half as much material as the first six we’re going to end the year with something very special for genealogists, local historians and those who just like looking at different war memorials.
There is nothing else like this on the internet for any other country so I think we can all give ourselves a collective pat on the back for its success, take pride in what has been achieved in such a short space of time, and thank Mr McNay for his innovative use of a forum.
Regards
Adam |

I would like to associate myself with the remarks of the last speaker
Speaking for myself, I look forward to to collecting a few further afield once my home ground is practically covered. Again for myself, many of the school, office/factory, church and village hall memorials are unlisted and unknown and often throw up some fascinating tales - I hope to see more of these once the main push of the civic memorials nears completion. |

Now this is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning.

I agree with every word Adam said.
I think there were a few of us looking at the idea of a website for Scottish war memorials but David's idea of using a forum format was a stroke of genius The beauty is its a democratic format and will grow through a community effort, and thats in perfect keeping with the subject matter.
I remember logging in at Christmas and exploring the site, it felt a bit like walking into a huge empty warehouse, you could almost hear the echoes!...look at it now, thousands of entrys later its shaping up to be a fantastic resource.
Well done to everyone involved. |

If we use the UKNIWM rule of thumb of one war memorial per 1,000 head of population it means there should be over 5,000 war memorials in Scotland.
There have been over 6,100 posts in over 1,800 topics. I've only done a rough calculation but of those topics I reckon about 1,500 are photographed memorials. That's a very good percentage of the estimated 5,000+ total so far
Still quite a few to get yet though!

I hate to break the bad news but I think 5,000 for Scotland is a significant underestimate. Given that we are including church, school, individual memorials etc, the number should be much higher than this. Dumfries and Galloway has a population of 148,000 and we certainly have over 380 positively identified so far which means we are likely to exceed THREE PER 1,000 head of population , but perhaps this ratio is lower in Urban areas? Having hunted memorials in Scotland and England, there are many more to be found this side of the border than down south. |
