Hi again,After a bit more prodding about this is what I have on J McCallum.Initally I had it in my head that Private McCallum might have been known a James but now I think he may have been named Joseph. He joined the 4TH A & S.H. August 1914 but was later transferred to the 2nd Bn. He had taken part in the Boar War gaining a campaign medal and two clasps for that war.He was married to Nellie McKim or McCallum. He lived at 43 Collage St Dumbarton.I think he may be on the Dumbarton War Memorial. Any further info would be great if possible. Many thanks Anne |

This could be the man on the Dumbarton Memorial. His name is Joseph but he died at Home and was never overseas. Obviously he was not in SA.
If not him when did your man die?

Oh this search is driving me mad, after talking myself into beliving the J stood for James then thinking no it must be Joseph on the Dumbarton Memorial, Ive now seen that I was wrong wrong wrong .Once I saw that Joseph was only 21 when he died ,Irelised it can't be him as the private McCallum I was looking for also fought in the Boer War.So I decided to look up a DC for Nellie McCallum nee McKim with no joy until I put in the name Helen the Sunday name for Nellie and BOOM there she was only she was the widow of a William McCallum! Iam now wondering if he was Josephs brother?William was Josephs fathers name. I think Ive got the news reports muddled and that private William McCallum did not die in WW1 after all.Id still like to know more about him though. Sorry folks but I will still use the info from the thread to put into Josephs folder ,Thanks. |
