All I know of Edward Gordon is that he was from Dumbarton,and is on the Dumbarton War Memorial,I also have a grainy wee photo of him ,but thats my lot Ive found a service return for an Edward Gordon S/8306 who died from his wounds in France 19.8.1916 age 24yrs, but Iam having trouble proving he is the same Edward I have in the photo? |

It's a good bet he's your man. SNWM gives a link to Dumbarton also, they have mucked up the service number though.
Surname: GORDON
Firstname: Edwards
Service Number: 4/8306
Date Death: 19/08/1916
Place of birth: Dumbarton
Other: 2nd Bn.

The number appears to be correct, although unusual for A & S Hdrs.
If the Service Return you mention shows a different number can you send me a copy by e-mail from the website link below?
This man landed in France on 2nd May 1915 and DOW.

Thanks ,Iam not great at sending things on the computer yet,Iam hopeing to fix that soon. I have the return on Scotlands People the only ref numbers I see are Army Form W. 3231 or Statutory Deaths 114/AF0054.It looks to me like his army number reads S4/8306.Thanks Anne |

It could be him, and likely correct but I would be looking for more to say for certain it was correct. I was simply trying to clarify the service number in order to correct the CWGC entry if it was wrong.
All you have is an Edward Gordon from Dumbarton and a record with an Edward Gordon born there. That comes from the same source as SNWM used and cannot be considerd 100% reliable. It also states he resided at Dumbarton, DOW, but gives his christian name as Edwards _________________ Jim
