Can you tell from a service number when a person joined the Army?
I am looking into 2 men
1) 4th Battalion Royal Scots Queen's Edinburgh Rifles : number 2429
2) 4th and 5th Battalion Royal Scots Queen's Edinburgh Rifles: numbers 3897 and 20/001

Is 2429 James Boyd? He enlisted on 10th November 1914

Is 3897 Alexr. Deans? Same date in 1915.

If not can you give the names?

John - there is information around but it can be a "black art"

There's some useful stuff at http://www.1914-1918.net/renumbering.htm

and at http://armyservicenumbers.blogspot.co.uk/2009/07/army-service-numbers-1881-1918-index.html
be warned this one can take a while to load but that may be my gas-fired broadband.

The second man you mention looks like
Medal card of Sinclair, John
Corps Regiment No Rank
Royal Scots 3897 Private
Royal Scots 201001 Private

The first one MIGHT be
Medal card of Burnett, Frederick J
Corps Regiment No Rank
4th Royal Scots 2429 Private
4th Royal Scots 2429 Private

but there are other possiblities.

Jim and Ken thanks for your replies.
Ken, you are correct in identifying these men. They are my grandfathers. FJ Burnett was 36 at outbreak of war and John Sinclair was 17. Trying to see when they joined the Army.
