I'm having difficulty finding this WW1 man on CWGC or SNWM.

He's listed on the Cupar memorial as E. D. A. Ballantyne, Black Watch.
In a newspaper article of 4th October 1915 it says L.Cpl. Edward Ballantyne died of wounds a day after sustaining them and was in the 2nd Btn. Parents given as residing at Cupar, no names given. He was a prewar regular and had served for 10 years being 28 at death having spent 8 of his 10 in India.

Anyone find him anywhere? I had no luck searching CWGC or fundung a war return.

Cheers,
Derek.

also no Edward Ballantyne (any spelling) on census for the whole of Fife in 1901 or 1911.

Only one man with initials EDA on CWGC and it is not him.

If we had a date of death, there are further checks to be done, I guessed it might be 26 Sep but even that did not help

You need to go onto page 2 on the Great War Forum thread to see that our Mark (Dhubthaigh) solved this one.

Here's a possibility to work on. The 1915 valuation rolls on ScotlandsPeople name an Austin Ballantyne in Cupar. The 1911 census shows him with his wife of 22 years and two sons ages 15 and 9. Austin and the older boy were born in Dundee. His wife and younger son were born in Rosemill by Dundee. The 1901 census shows an older Austin Ballantyne in Dundee with his wife and grandson Edward, age 17, a machine fitter apprentice, born in Strathmartine (Forfarshire).

In Strathmartine, an Edward David Rattray Anderson was born on 23-Feb-1884, the illegitimate son of barmaid Mary Ann Anderson. An entry in the Register of Corrected Entries (RCE) shows a paternity action raised names the father as clerk, Henry Rattray. On 30-Nov-1888, Mary Ann Anderson of Strathmartine married Austin Ballantyne. In the 1891 census, they can be found in Tayport, Ferryport-on-Craig; Austin, Mary Ann, and son - now known as Edward Ballantyne (age 7).

So E D A Ballantyne was presumably Edward David Anderson Ballantyne.

ADP

PS - while I have been looking into this one - a solution has been given (see the post above). Did he reach the same answer as I did?
