Name: Charles Landers
Rank: Private
Service Number: 52880
Unit: 3rd Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers
Commeomorated on: Wigtown War Memorial
Buried at: Newton Stewart

As part of my continuing research into Wigtown War Memorial I have come to Charles Landers, the second son of Thomas Landers of Kirkland, Wigtown. According to the BMD section of the Galloway Gazette, Charles Landers died on 8th July 1919 whilest being treated at the 3rd Scottish Hospital Glasgow. I understand that military personnel were moved out of the hospital in 1919 and that it reverted to civilian use the following year.

So, perhaps, Charles was one of the last of the military to die there. As the 3rd Bn was a training unit, I guess his death may have been due to illness. Does anyone have any more information on Charles Landers, please? Any help gratefully received!

Mike

Am checking further. He died at Stobhill and shown as Private, 3rd R.S.F. but unfortunately no service number.

Update No other info found

His death certificate lists three causes of death:
  • Suppuration
  • Inflammation of left middle ear
  • Septic meningitis

As "Spoons" points out there is no mention of his military service on the gravestone and he is not listed on the local War Memorial.

Here's what I have on him

Thanks to all three. This really helps to provide a sketch of him. East Kirkland farm is not far from me - indeed their sheep are in the field right next to my garden and I know the folk there reasonably well. The cause of death - meningitis - also strikes a chord as my son was struck down with it when he was a baby - luckily he has suffered no ill effects.
