I'm trying to do some mini-biographies of the men commemorated on Wigtown War Memorial who died in World War One. I'd like to get a little more background on Private 35437 William Jamieson, 4th Battalion Cameronians (Scottish Rifles). He died at the age of 24 on 9 June 1917. He is buried at Greenock Cemetery and is also commemorated on Port William War Memorial.
I understand that the 4th Battalion was based at Greenock/Hadington on "coastal Defence" work. What would that entail and what would be the hazards? The Galloway Gazette states that Pte Jamieson died "suddenly" at Greenock Infirmary. |

Hi,
Have you looked up his death cert on scotlandspeople? Possibly someone with Ancestry access can look and see if any surviving service file exists.

Hello Mike and welcome.
The Long Long Trail site has "4th (Extra Reserve) Battalion
August 1914 : in Hamilton. A training unit, it remained in UK throughout the war. Moved in August 1914 to Gourock and in April 1916 to Greenock."
The cause of death may have had nothing to do with his military service.
I see his parents were at Port William. The Death Cert. will also give the name of the person who registered the death which might explain why he was buried in Greenock rather than returned home.

From Scotlands People, Private Jamieson died of TB, meningitis and endocarditis. The death certificate also records him as a motor driver.

Thanks to the letter writer for info on cause of death (I have a son who survived meningitis so appreciate the poor lad's suffering).
Ken - Thomas McCheyne did fight for the Canadians, the Eastern Ontario Regt. There's rather a good photo of him at http://www.veterans.gc.ca/eng/collections/virtualmem/photoview/460775/59162. |
