Memorial: Edinburgh Corn Market Great War Roll of Honour
Location: Main Hall, Corn Exchange, New Market Road, Edinburgh, EH14 1RJ
Grid Ref: ND229607
UKNIWM Ref: not listed
A poor picture as my mobile phone struggles to focus in low-light conditions. I will try and get in there with my 'proper' camera. |

Wow, that's some size! A lot of names too. I think you're gonna need a lot of close ups for that.

Only every second column has names, the alternate columns have regiment details. It looks like about 300 names (about 60 in each of the full-height columns and about 30 in each of the half-height columns).
A view of the memorial looking down the hall can be seen on the Corn Exchange website at:

Many thanks to the reader of the posts above who sent these pictures my way to publish here.
Note - there are three names out of their alphabetical place, presumably added later, at the foot of the two centre columns.

Can I ask just who would feature on the Corn Market Great War Roll of Honour? Employees or clients or what?
And from the names I've searched for, is this just a list of the above who served?
It's a lovely memorial. _________________

I don't know the answer to your question, so I picked on one random person on the list.
CWGC: Name: BROCK, SYDNEY EDWARD
Rank: Captain
Date of Death: 11/11/1918
Age:36
Regiment/Service: Royal Scots 10th Cyclist Bn.
Awards: M C
Grave Reference: Against North wall
Cemetery: KIRKLISTON BURIAL GROUND
Additional Information: Son of James Easton Brock and Harriett Brock, of Kirkliston.
SNWM: Surname: BROCK
First name: Sydney Edward
Service Number:
Date Death: 11/11/1918
Decoration: MC
Place of birth:
Other: 10th (Cyclist) Bn. (T.).
SNWM roll: THE ROYAL SCOTS (LOTHIAN REGIMENT)
Rank: Capt.
Theatre of death: Unknown
His death certificate tells us that he was a farmer from Kirkliston, who died in a military hospital in Aberdeen, from gunshot wounds and septicæmia. His death was hours before the armistice.
On that basis, I would guess that made him a client of the Corn Exchange.
He is also listed on the Kirkliston War Memorial.

Some great photographs of what is a large and difficult memorial to capture.
There are a lot of Lothian & Border Horse names and other yeomanry units.
I tried a few names. Some I found on CWGC others I didn't e.g. only one out of three for the rare surname McCrostie.
I would suggest it is a list of those who served and those who died.
McCROSTIE, CHARLES HUTCHISON
Rank: Second Lieutenant
Date of Death: 01/07/1916
Age: 31
Regiment/Service: Highland Light Infantry, 19th Bn. attd. 14th T.M. Bty.
Grave Reference: XVIII. AA. 1.
Cemetery: VILLERS-BRETONNEUX MILITARY CEMETERY
Additional Information: Son of Hugh and Agnes Watson McCrostie, of 144, Newhaven Rd., Leith. Born at Edinburgh.

a number of the names show a mark after the regiment - can't make it out from the photos. I guess this indicates those who died.

Hi Paul,
On looking at the full-sized images (before they were uploaded to Photobucket which limits the image sizes) and enlarging them, I see no symbols after the names. The only 'marks' after some of the regiments are underlined superscript characters for some of the abbreviations.
For example:
McCROSTIE. R. ATHOLE M.
2ND LIEUT 8TH CAMERON HLRS
The characters in red and underlined are superscripted on the memorial (the forum won't let me do superscript here).
He looks to have survived the war and lived until 1965. His birth certificate shows him to be the brother of Charles H McCrostie listed above.
The other McCrostie, H Cecil, is another brother. He too survived the war, and lived until 1970.
This seems to confirm Adam's suggestion that the Roll of Honour is of those who served, whether they died or lived through the war.

Thanks ADP. Most of the rolls I have seen have a cross or asterix against those who died. Perils of seeing what I expected to see, probably as much my eyesight as th scale of the memorial.
