The Bulldozer News letter of the COMBINED OPERATIONS ASSOCIATION - Inveraray 1940-1945 - WINTER 2014:

Has in its pages this :

"FURNACE is a small village on the shores of Loch Fyne in Mid Argyll. The FURNACE WAR MEMORIAL was presented to the village by the company who owned the local quarry. It was created from granite from the quarry by local craftsmen. FRANCIS NICOL , the quarry manager designed the monument and the iron rail was made by ALEXANDER COCKBURN , chief blacksmith at the quarry.

The Unveiling of the memorial too place in 1921 . Despite torrential weather many people braved the storms to come by car, bicycle and foot from surrounding villages as well as far away hill villages and home to honour " The Dead Who Live ."

As COLONEL MAC RAE - GILSTRAP of EILEAN DONAN and Ballimore unveiled the memorial he said ,

"Gentlemen of the Furnace War Memorial Committee , ladies and gentlemen . I cannot too truly appreciate the very great honour you have conferred on me today in asking me to unveil this memorial which you have erected to those brave and gallant men .

This Memorial is erected to commemorate those men who went to defend us never to return . We can never forget them : they will live forever in our memories .

In time to come other generations will arise ; they will look on this Monument , it will be up to them to straighten their backs and say , What our fathers did we will do should a like occasion ever arise ."

On Remembrance Sunday , 9th November 2104 , the villagers gathered at the Monument as they did at the unveiling in 1921 , this time to present and dedicate the Roll of Honour to commemorate those brave men of Furnace. The Roll of Honour book was presented by James Jepson to Rev Dr R. MacLeod and now has a special place in the church at CUMLODDEN, FURNACE .
