James Priestly a Private - National Reserves, died at home in 1917 aged 46. He's listed on his local War Memorial but I'm guessing he would not be considered a War Death?

Hi Ken,

I have him on my database, but didn't realise that he had died. The important fact is that he was a discharged reservist, so very much depends whether his cause of death matches the reason for discharge. Luckily there is an extant WO 364 file:

James Priestley
Born: Penninghame, Wigtownshire
Resided: 60 Arthur Street, Newton Stewart
Occupation: Mason
Enlisted: 26th Apr 1915
Service: Private 20131, No.1 Supernumerary Coy., 5th KOSB
Discharged 17th Mar 1916, age 45, xvi no longer physically fit for war service
Reason for discharge: Sarcoma of Maxilla

I will send you his file.

Cheers,

Stuart

Cheers Stuart - I didn't realise that he was a KOSB man.
His cause of death is given as "Sarcoma of Face - 1 year" so he may well be a non-com candidate?
I'll e-mail details. Thanks for the file.

The information in his file indicates that James Priestly's illness was a pre-existing condition and not due to military service.
Jim (Kinnethmont) and his colleagues have confirmed that this rules him out as a non-com.
