On the memorial to "old boys" of the former Stronord School in Minnigaff Parish near Newton Stewart is AND. Mc CANDLISH, A&SH.
http://warmemscot.s4.bizhat.com/warmemscot-ftopic5389.html

I cannot find him anywhere - CWGC, SNWM, MIC, Scotlandspeople and he is not on the Stewartry Roll of Honour.

All the others (bar one) are listed on the Minnigaff Parish WM -
JAS. INNES, CAN. is on the adjacent Kirkmabreck Parish WM in Creetown.

Help, please.

Cheers Roxy. I think that's him. SNWM has born Newton Stewart and there is a birth in 1883 in Minnigaff for Andrew McCandlish but nothing in the area for an Andrew Candlish.
I guess he dropped the "Mc" somewhere along the way.

CANDLISH, ANDREW
Rank:Private
Service No:8183
Date of Death:14/11/1914
Age:32
Regiment/Service:Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders
2nd Bn.
Grave ReferenceIII. C. 29.
CemeteryBOULOGNE EASTERN CEMETERY
Additional Information:
Son of Janet Candlish, of Kirkcowan, Wigtownshire; husband of Helen Candlish, of Gray Hill, Glenluce, Wigtownshire.

Maybe it's something to do with Kirkcowan and/or Glenluce? This is the second time I've had a man from that area who dropped the "Mc" from his name. Rolling Eyes
Robert Morlan, Scots Guardsman and Glasgow Policeman was born Mc Morlan.

Ken

He was recorded as McCandlish in the Census of 1891, 1901 & 1911. So was his mother in 1891 & 1901.
