Can anyone tell me anything about this regiment/unit?
I can't say I've ever heard of it before.
The reference is within the published Denny & Dunipace Roll of Honour and refers to:
GIBSON, A., 91 Broad Street, Denny
3rd Scottish Pro. Batt., No. 3372
(Joined 1915)

Did he die during the war?
If he did, stick his service number into CWGC, that might give you a clue.
Failing that, try Ancestry, see if his Medal Index Card or (if it survived) a service record will give you more info. |

Just a thought in case it helps - could be Provost Battalion (Military Police)

It will be Provisional Battalion. I'm sure these were home service units but I can't remember where I read about them before. I'm not sure they may have had something to do with the Derby scheme.

Thanks for all the suggestions folks.
The problem with Denny & Dunipace Roll of Honour is that I think it must have been published towards the end of 1919, so wasn't completely 'up-to-date' with regards to deaths after this date.
It contains a list of 902 men 'who served', so it's a long slow process trying to I.D. many of them.
I have no idea what the criteria was for inclusion as I've found loads of men not listed in it, so the total of 902 wasn't very accurate either.
I don't have any further information about 'A. Gibson'. I'll try CWGC and see if anything comes up, but this will only verify if he died, not if he survived.

How about a medal index card search? He's got a provisional battalion number and if he transferred to 16th Argylls he might be found under that regiment?

I had a look last night. There are rather a lot of A Gibsons listed. |

I checked CWGC and no-one of that number is listed, so he probably survived the war.
I've spent hours on Ancestry without any luck either - as David says - there's quite a lot of A. Gibsons and I've tried entering every combination I can think of and not even found a Medal Card.
Onwards and upwards though!
