It was with the deepest sorrow that the community learned on Tuesday that Lieut.-Colonel Philip Laurence Kington Blair Oliphant, D.S.O., of Ardblair, had died of wounds in a hospital abroad. Last week we reported he had been wounded by gunshot on 28th March, and according to the latest bulletin he was, towards the end of last week, progressing very satisfactorily. On Monday, however, Mrs Blair Oliphant received a telegram that he was dangerously ill, and that afternoon she left to visit him, but was intercepted in London with a message at the War Office that her husband had passed away on Monday afternoon.
Lieut.-Colonel Blair Oliphant, who was the only son of the late Mr Philip Oliphant Kington Blair Oliphant of Ardblair, Blairgowrie, was born at Datchet, near Windsor, on December 17th, 1867, and was educated at Harrow. Choosing a military career, he entered the Rifle Brigade in 1888, and served several years in India. He retired from the Army in 1903 with the rank of Captain, and went into the Reserve of Officers, then taking up residence on his estate at Ardblair Castle. In the Ulster question a few years ago he took a keen interest, and in June 1914, he went to Ireland to help raise the Ulster Volunteers, which were drafted to France in 1915 as the 11th Royal Irish Rifles, with Lieut.-Colonel Blair Oliphant second in command. Subsequently he was given command of the Battalion. He received his D.S.O. (an immediate reward) at Thiepval on July 1st, 1916, and was four times mentioned in despatches.
The circumstances under which Lieut.-Colonel Blair Oliphant won his distinction for conspicuous gallantry were as under: - “When there was difficulty in getting information regarding the situation owing to casualties among officers and runners and the enemy’s heavy barrage, he went forward under very heavy fire, organised scattered parties in the firing lines, repelled a counter attack, and brought back valuable information”.
On 28th March last he was in charge of part of the line, and finding a Corporal of the Battalion badly wounded in the leg, went to help him, and, with the assistance of a Sergeant, dressed the wound. Together they carried the man three-quarters of the way back, when the Sergeant was hit in the leg, and had to limp back to cover. Lieut.-Colonel Blair Oliphant went to get more help, and returned with two men to the Corporal, who was quite helpless. As they were trying to lift him Lieut.-Colonel Blair Oliphant was hit in the thigh and had to come back. He sent two more men to the Corporal, who was hit again, and another n.c.o., who was helping, was hit through the hand. The Lieut.-Colonel’s wound was then tied up by a man in his Battalion, who helped him to walk four miles to the rear, where a stretcher was obtained. He was eventually admitted to a base hospital on 30th March, and died there on 8th April.
The deceased was a well-known writer, having published books on Russia, and several other novels.
As a landlord he was very kind and considerate and he was held in the highest esteem by his tenantry, as by the whole community, with which he was closely connected, and in whose affairs he was always greatly interested.
Sincere sympathy has gone out to Mrs Blair Oliphant, her daughter, and three sons, and to the deceased’s aged mother and his sister, who also resides at Ardblair Castle, in their sore bereavement of one who was held in such universal respect.

GEORGE DENIS MACPHERSON

News was received here on Thursday of the death in action in France on Sunday of Major George Denis Macpherson, fourth son of Mrs Macpherson, Blairgowrie.
The news was conveyed in a letter from his soldier servant, Private James Moss, who stated that Major Macpherson was killed while leading his men on, and that “ he got the praise of every man who followed him”.
Major Macpherson, who was 53 years old, was educated at Winchester, and obtained a commission in the Royal Munster Fusiliers in 1882. He fought with that regiment in the South African War, and was very seriously wounded at the taking of Bethlehem. He received the honour of a Brevet Majority for his services during the War.
Having partially recovered from his wound, he was appointed an instructor at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst, and occupied the post for eighteen months.
Thereafter he rejoined his regiment in South Africa, and served with it in that country and at Gibraltar till 1905, when, being still in ill-health, he resigned his commission, and since then had resided in Blairgowrie.
At the beginning of the present war Major Macpherson volunteered for active service, and in September of last year he was appointed second in command of the 13th Royal Scots. He went out with his regiment to France on 8th July, and within a fortnight of arriving there was sent to the trenches at the Front.
A private of the 13th Royal Scots, who returned wounded from France this week, informed a correspondent that the late Major Macpherson was remarkably popular with his battalion, and that his death aroused great sorrow.
He took such a deep personal interest in his men that they one and all affectionately named him “Faither”. When offenders were brought before him charged with “crimes” he invariably dismissed them with words of fatherly advice, as to their personal behaviour, instead of imposing a punishment.
One aspect of Major Macpherson’s character that impressed the men was his unfailing courtesy and gentlemanly manner. He never passed without saying “Good Morning”, or another appropriate greeting. He always acknowledged their salutes in such a proper regimental way that a stranger might have thought the major was private and they the superior officers.
Regarding Major McPherson's personal bravery and coolness in the trenches, the soldier had the highest praise to bestow. Before the great charge began the warning was passed along the line - “Charge when you see the major on the parapet”. The last words the informant heard the major say were - “Royal Scots, follow me”, as he shouted and leapt the parapet of the trench. Needless to say, the men sprang en masse under a hail of lead from rifles and machine guns. The soldier did not see the major fall, as he himself was wounded a few seconds after he left the trench.

Pvt. Samuel Jamieson, Australian Forces, fourth son of the late Jas. Jamieson, High Street, Rattray was killed by a shell on the 18th August.
He enlisted in Australia two years ago, and was through the Gallipoli Campaign, being in all 18 months on foreign service.
Deceased, who was 30 years of age, was employed at Ballintuim before emigrating to Australia. He has three brothers with the colours.
In a letter from the chaplain to deceased’s sister, Mrs Anderson, Old Rattray, the writer, in tendering the sincere sympathy of the battalion, says:- “Pvt. Jamieson was a good soldier and an excellent comrade. He was highly esteemed, and will be much missed. It will be some comfort to you to know that he suffered no pain, death being instantaneous”.

Samuel Jamieson is also commemorated on panel 47 of the Australian National War Memorial.

Harry Perks and John S Donaldson, both of the 6th Black Watch, died on 30th July 1916, and are buried in Caterpillar Valley Cemetery, Longueval, near Albert. My Dad fought alongside them and in July 1973 we took him to visit their graves. I took slides if anyone would like a copy.

My g-uncle John Duffy fell with the 6th B.W. on Sunday 30th July 1916 when they were attacking High Wood. His body was never recovered and he is commemorated on Thiepval Memorial & here in Blairgowrie. If you have slides I'd love to see them and some background on your dad - it would be really appreciated.
