Here's a little puzzle for you.
While researching the death of William McMaster whose CWG is in Balmaghie Churchyard and who is listed on the WM there, the following entry on the register is for:
James Tubby, Horseman (Private A.S.C. Labour Battalion) 1 March 1919 age 25. Usual address Midtown, Urr Parish (Kirkcudbrightshire)
Married to Elizabeth Rosetta Felgate of Great Yarmouth.
They were married in March Q 1916 at Mutford, Norfolk/Suffolk border.
Both men died on the same day of influenza/pneumonia in Castle Douglas Cottage Hospital.
Cannot find any record for James Tubby (apart from his marriage) and he doesn't appear to be listed on any local WM. _________________ Ken |

Now that is a puzzle. There was a James Henry Tubby from Gt Yarmouth but he was killed in 1914 (de Ruvigny and MIC). So we are looking for a second James Tubby from the same town? I cannot identify him as one of the other 3 James Tubby who have MIC cards either.
I am sure you will have checked yourself, but he is not listed in the Stewartry ROH.

I just noticed, one of the MIC I checked was for James J Tubby MGC 60994. It has the date 27 Nov 1978 stamped on it in red ink. Any ideas?

Ken
Am checking Tubby further. He looks like he may qualify for a move to the Non Comms section. It is a pity the service number is not recorded.
Update - Nothing further found.

This might relate to contact by NOK at that time. _________________ Jim

Just brining this back to the top - I've been contacted by a possible relative of James Tubby. Any further news? _________________ Ken |

Hi Ken
Further to direct contact recently, there are no surviving service / official records to confim Tubby died in service, assuming the DC details are correct. If only his service number had been given by the informant.
It looks like he was caught up by Conscription in 1916 and never served overseas. _________________ Jim

Thanks for looking again Jim.
I've been doing a bit of research on "The Long, Long Trail" and other places about ASC Labour Companies, Agricultural Companies and the Labour Corps. What a rat's nest
I'm really none the wiser but I think James Tubby should have been Labour Corps at the time of his death but even officially men who were posted to the Corps were classified by their former Regiment.
I suspect the chances of identifying this man are slim but it is interesting _________________ Ken |

Ken
You will need to check if there anything is in the local papers about him. There is no possibility I could put him forward to MOD / CWGC, since the evidence required does not exist.
Thanks for sending on the DC.
His usual address is the Urr one which suggests he was residing there for some time, probably billeted with the farmer at Midtown. His wife’s home address is at Gt. Yarmouth and she was not present when the death occurred, even though she was the Informant. _________________ Jim

Hi Ken
Don't mean to muddy the waters on this one, but could I ask if the death cert lists his mum and dad's name? If so, were they John William Tubby, Agricultural Labourer, and Elizabeth Jane Tubby?
I haven't seen the death cert but I did do a basic death search on Scotlands people and noted there was a James Tubby who died in 1919 aged 25, giving his birth date as being around 1894.
I then used www.Findmypast to look at the 1901 census for the UK for a James Tubby born around 1894. It only listed one. A son of John Tubby, Agricultural Labourer, and Elizabeth Tubby of Norwich Road, Fritton. James was born in Fritton, Norfolk around 1894.
I then looked at the 1911 English/Welsh census for a James Tubby born around 1894. It lists 2. One in Suffolk the other in Norfolk. The one in Norfolk was listed now as James John Tubby, son of John William Tubby, Yardman on Farm, and Elizabeth Jane Tubby of Park Farm Silfield, Wymondham, Norfolk. James was a Farm Labourer born around 1893 in Fritton, Norfolk. I believe he is the same one in the 1901 census but now called James John Tubby.
I noticed earlier that it was stated that there was a medal card for a James J Tubby who served as Pte 60994 in the MGC. As noted earlier the medal card has red writing on it dated 27 Nov 1978.
I simply offer the census info as a possible tie to the medal card, and as I haven't seen the death cert, I can't confirm if the parents on that cert match the 1901 & 1911 James John Tubby.
Regards

In addition to what I've written above, the national ROH website also has this man on a memorial in Swardeston, Norfolk. It suggests though that he served and survived as opposed to being a casualty or having later died.

LIT - sorry didn't get a message that you had posted.
His parents were James Tubby (a Cowman) and Sarah Hewitt. I did trace their marriage in Norfolk but can't remember the details. _________________ Ken |

Hi Ken
Thanks for getting back to me, based on the information you gave, in the 1911 census James was recorded as being with his grandfather, Robert Tubby, a Market Gardener residing at Station Road, South Belton, Great Yarmouth, Registration District = Mutford and the County = Suffolk. James was a Labourer Gradener , aged 17, born at Caister on Sea which I believe is in Norfolk.
James's father and mother, James & Sarah, were residing at School Lane, Bradwell, Mutford, Suffolk.
Not sure if this helps in any way but fills out his story a bit.
Regards

Hi LIT- found my notes.
James Tubby married Elizabeth Rosetta Felgate in March Q 1916 in Mutford.
He was born in Sept. Q 1893 in Flegg, Norfolk.
His parents James Tubby (indexed as Tully) married Sarah Hewitt in Dec. Q 1892 in Flegg.
ps - there was a James John Tubby born Dec. Q 1893 in Depwade on Norfolk/Suffolk border.
Thanks ever so for your info. _________________ Ken |
