Erected by Robert Hunter in memory of his wife Mary Ann Cargill who died April 1901 aged 42. Also his wife Helen Coull who died April 1918 aged 54. Also his son Ernest who was killed in action Nov 1916 aged 27. Also his son Andrew who was killed in action Nov 1916 aged 23. The above Robert Hunter died at Oban 1946 aged 85.
I can't find them on CWGC or in Ancestry....
Delboy has a picture of the gravestone but why can't I find them in any records.

How odd.
From searching scotlandspeople:
Robert Hunter married Mary Ann Cargill in 1884 in Kincardineshire.
Mary died in 1901 in Kincardineshire.
Robert married Helen Coull in 1904 in Kincardineshire.
Helen died in 1918 in Kincardineshire.

But there is neither an Andrew Hunter nor an Ernest Hunter born in the county 1884 - 1901.
Does the family appear on 1891 or 1901 census?

ps - what is Ernest's year of death?
Derek on SWGP has 1915. Anne has 1916 here.

1916 is correct, i had some bad images to read and Anne's done a better job of transcribing it, which i've now altered in the thread.

[edit]

I had a look at the 1911 census and Andrew is present and described as a step son "Andrew Walker", born at Gourdon, where there is an A. Walker of the Gordon Highlanders listed on the local memorial.
So Andrew and Ernest could well have served under their original surnames of Walker

Possibly this Andrew?

WALKER, ANDREW
Rank: Private
Service No: S/43423
Date of Death: 13/11/1916
Regiment/Service: Gordon Highlanders 1st Bn.
Panel Reference: Pier and Face 15 B and 15 C.
Memorial: THIEPVAL MEMORIAL

War return has age at 24, enlisted Banchory.

Derek.

I'm away to check Royal Naval Division as they were fighting Nov 1916 right next to Y Ravine so maybe he's there under another name....

Some interesting stuff on Ernest Taylor at
http://www.canadiangreatwarproject.com/searches/soldierDetail.asp?ID=32103
Including "Ernest emigrated to Canada before WW1. Seems to have ended up in BC. Ernest grew up in a small fishing village, Gourdon, on the east coast of Scotland. His next of kin was his twin sister, Lily, who died in 1918 in the flu pandemic."

It looks as though someone did some research on him.

The Canadian GWP gives his place of birth as Inverurie, Aberdeenshire.
scotlandspeople seems to confirm this (and not Bervie)

Can I ask...does this thread relate to the War Graves Project?

If it does, why are we not posting there?

I used the draft Monumental Inscriptions booklet at Aberdeen Family History to find the info on the Hunter gravestone info.
It was only when I asked for help there to find Ernest and Andrew where to go next...well the helper I got did put in a search and found the info.
I usually put all my info on this project so it didn't come to my mind....sorry it's an age thing....will keep it in mind
