Hi,

Can any members inform me what the abbreviation SS stands for in the address 3 field for men commemorated in the Glasgow Roll of Honour. I am trying to locate where Pvt 18824 Peter Drummond KIA near Loos on the 19th January 1916 may be commemorated. He was born in Inverkeithing in 1880 and his address in Glasgow was 35 McKinlay Street.

Rgds,
Alex

Not sure - that's what it was in the original text.

I think it may be South Side?

McKinlay Street runs between Devon Street and Turrif Street at the southern end of the Gorbals district in Glasgow.
This was commonly referred to as the Sou' Side of Glasgow.
It is close to the gushet of Eginton Street and Pollokshaws Road.

I am, intermittently, researching naval personnel who were killed in the Battle of Jutland. I can appreciate the amount of effort that must have been used to transcribe the Glasgow Roll of Honour and have used the Roll of Honour frequently to cross check other references.

Is there any way through the Forum of flagging up personnel who may have been missed in the initial recording of the Roll of Honour? Or is this the thread to do just that?

Feel free to list names here. I have been notified that Irene O'Brien at the Glasgow Archives has the facility to get names added on to the existing Roll, so I will endeavour to have the names passed on to her.

Since the 2011 publication of the Glasgow Roll of Honour by the SMRG, I have found this to be an invaluable source of information.

In cross referring records drawn from the CWGC, Scotland’s People and the SNWM with those personnel recorded on the Glasgow Roll of Honour, I believe that there are a number of personnel who may be considered for inclusion in the GRoH : -

William Boyle : Boy 1st. Class (J/42425) Royal Navy HMS Indefatigable : born Glasgow 1900 : died 31 May 1916 : Next of kin David (Father) 275 Castle Street Glasgow

Frederick Brown : Stoker (7769/S) Royal Naval Reserve HMS Queen Mary : born Maryhill 1894 : died 31 May 1916 : Next of kin Mary A. (mother) c/o Mrs. Watson 44 Murray Street, Glasgow

Peter Donnelly : Ordinary Seaman (SS/5402) Royal Navy HMS Defence : born Glasgow 1895 : died 31 May 1916 : Son of James Gall Donnelly and Agnes Donnelly of 526 Gallowgate Street, Glasgow.

Walter Weir Jamieson : Stoker 1st. Class (SS/113712) Royal Navy HMS Defence : born Glasgow 1892 ; died 31 May 1916 : Son of George and Christina Jamieson of 660 Shettleston Road, Shettleston, Glasgow.

Joseph Clark Simpson : Private : (Ply/15320) RMLI HMS Indefatigable: born 6 May 1889 Whiteinch, Glasgow. (not 5 May 1890 as recorded in his Statutory Death notice : died 31 May 1916 : Next of kin Elsie Simpson (mother), 3 Scotstoun Place, Scotstoun, Glasgow.
