I need some help with another one from the Maxwelltown/Troqueer WM in Dumfries.

PTE. W. GILLESPIE, KOSB

There is no obvious sign of him on CWGC/SNWM but there is a WALTER GILLESPIE on the St. Michael's Church Memorial in Dumfries.
I have found a MIC for a Walter Gillespie Pte. 11306 KOSB and 29048 1st Garrison Bn. RS.

On 6/11/1915 a Walter Gillespie, aged 21, died of TB at his home in Dumfries but there is no mention of a military connection. Help Crying or Very sad

Hi Ken,

From my files:

Name: Walter Gillespie
Residence: 12 Friars Vennel, Dumfries
Occupation: Vanman
Enlisted: 17 Oct 1914 as Private 2134, 2/5th KOSB
Discharged: 28 Apr 1915 under KR 392 iii (cc)
Reason: Pulmonary Tuberculosis

*(iii) Not being likely to become an efficient soldier
(cc) Recruits with more than three months service considered unfit for further military service

His WO 364 file survives, so a good chance of forwarding this case. Just have to show that he is the same man. There can't be too many men of that name and age, father Robert and residing in/around Dumfries.

Cheers,

Stuart

Ken

Can you send me the DC and I will look into it to see if a case can be made?

Jim and Stuart
Gillespie's DC on it's way.
He is shown as a Grocer's Porter - of 12 Friars Vennel, Dumfries.
Father: Robert. Mother: Agnes (Agnew) Gillespie.

So same address, same father's name. Looks good.

Ken

I have looked at the details which survive and could not put Gillespie forward as a non comm case.
As Stuart details he was discharged under KR 392 (iii) cc

This is not due to his illness ( ie medical discharge) but his " Not being likely to become an efficient soldier "

I think there is little doubt he had TB when he enlisted as the record makes clear is was NOT attributable to military serrvice.

Sorry.
