Hello,

This has been set up to discuss and appreciate the War Memorials in Scotland; and is most welcome.

Obviously it will attract those with such a particular interest and much information will be obtained, I'm sure.

However, I wondered about the presentation of the research. Should all transcription + photos be applied within the relevant area here to provide a form of database? Or should it be presented on a specific web site relating purely to Scottish Memorials. Or should this info. be supplied to Roll-of-Honour.com for example?

I know there are those who have set up their own web sites but it may be better finding everything in the same place. I for one wouldn't have a clue about setting up my own site!

Does anyone have particular thoughts or views?

regards,
Mark

David,

I see under - http://warmemscot.s4.bizhat.com/viewtopic.php?t=1 - that you might soon be providing an answer!

It will take time/commitment but count me in

regards,
Mark

The plan was to set up a website showcasing the memorials, with transcripts of the names, and as much information as possible.

Unfortunately, I'm a complete idiot when it comes to web design. So I'm open to any suggestions as to how to go forward.

In the meantime, I think this forum is a good way of going about things. It's easy enough for people to add information to a post about one of the memorials.

David, myself and Jim McGinaly have been batting some ideas for a Scottish War Memorial website about for a while and David has been doing a lot of research into finding a suitable host for the website. Unfortunately there are a lot of other commitments in our lives at the moment so progress has been slow.
David has taken the bull by the horns and set this forum up but our intention is still to get a website up and running. In the mean time we can share a lot of the information we have here. It’s not ideal but at least the information is getting out there. Roll-of-Honour is a very good site but it is limiting itself to transcriptions and so I think there is a place for another site with broader aims.

In the mean time spread the word. The people who use this forum needn’t be the usual suspects from the GWDF. Anyone with an interest in their local war memorial, genealogists, people interested in sculpture, people researching local T.F. units etc. can all get something out of this forum.

If you are a member of other relevant forums please post a message with a link to this one.

Regards

Adam

Hello,

Jim McGinlay has set up a superb website on Alexander Carrick.

What about doing something along those lines?

regards,

Mark

This site has taken off fantastically and is now a superb reference area. Any researched memorials I am more than happy to put on-line on the www.roll-of-honour.com web site but as you have all said its time, and currently I have a very large backlog. Having said that I will take any memorials and put them on-line with the copyright going to the person who did the work.

Keep up the good work. This is a superb piece of work.
