Another time when the church was locked and the key holder far away. This was the best I could do through a grimy window, using flash and a long lens.

Lost in the wreck of HMHS Rohilla off Whitby on 30th October 1914 |
The Hospital Ship "Rohilla" struck rocks and ran aground at Whitby in the early hours of Friday 30 October 1914 enroute from Leith to Dunkirk.
There is a good write up of the events at
http://www.eskside.co.uk/ss_rohilla/craven_herald_20Nov1914.htm
Since this sinking was not due to enemy action then Merchant Navy fatalities are not included on the CWGC Register.
Although, having said that, one apparently is - Electrician William Perrin.
However, although shown as Mercantile Marine, he does have a service number so was probably RN Reserve.
Many of those on the CWGC Register were Naval Sick Berth Attendants although the newspaper article refers to them as "Ambulance Men".
Like this man:
BIRTWISTLE, MILTON
Rank:Senior Reserve Attendant
Service No:M/10068
Date of Death:30/10/1914
Age:33
Regiment/Service:Royal Naval Auxiliary Sick Berth Reserve
H.M. H.S."Rohilla"
Panel Reference8.

Additional Information:
Son of Alice Birtwistle and the late John Birtwistle; husband of Sarah Birtwistle, of 73, Rainhall Rd., Barnoldswick, Yorks. _________________ Ken |
