The plaque for Maxwell Parish Church in Coatbridge lists a Theodore Gracie. He is not listed on the main Coatbridge Civic memorial.
I have checked CWGC and SNWM and can find nothing.
His service record is on Ancestry and shows he was discharge unfit in 1916 from the Royal Irish Fusiliers. It states that his illness originated from his service in Salonika.
I have found his death certificate from 1918. It states he is an Tuber Worker (Army Pensioner) and that cause of death was vascular disease of the heart - this was the reason for his discharge.
Does he qualify as a non-comm?
I can supply an image of the death certification if required. Service Record is on Ancestry.

Thanks for DC, which ties up the cause, identity, etc.
15814 Theodore Byrne Gracie, 5th Battalion, Royal Irish Fusiliers has been forwarded as a case, on David's behalf, to MOD / CWGC as a post discharge service related death non comm ( VDH). His details are now in the system.
Will update when further details available.
It is likely he is buried in the Coatbridge area. Can you check local papers to see if an obit details where ?
Well done David in finding him. _________________ Jim

The initial work on this was done by Morag White, "mhomac" as she is known on the forum, so well done to her as well. |

Enquiries are underway to try and establish place of burial and I will update if I have any news.
What's the general average timescale for names being accepted? Gracie is listed on the Maxwell Church memorial in Coatbridge and there will be a dedication of a book of remembrance of the names in November - it would be nice to have him "home" by then. |

David
There is no real " average " time to quote. I have some oustanding from early 2009.
I think it unlikely it will be completed by November. As soon as I hear back I will update you.
Post discharge cases, such as Gracie, take longest to complete. After MOD accept a case, CWGC have their own processes to complete and enquiries to make, if a grave is located, etc. Eight to fifteen months seems to be the general varience on those I have put forward.
In service deaths are usually completed fairly quickly by MOD as in most cases their own records, presented as evidence, confirms the case. The record for this in my case is one week. _________________ Jim

Found him!!
He's buried in Old Monkland Cemetery, Section 229, Lair 72.
Will try and nip down to Coatbridge and see if if there's an existing stone.

Great news that a grave has been found. Can you send me on an image if you get one? Thanks. _________________ Jim

There is no mention of Theodore Gracie on a small gravestone erected for his wife.
However, confirmation has been given by the Cemetery Records Office that he was interred in the grave. There are other people interred that we think are some of his children as well as his wife.
Is this all the information required?

Anne / Morag
Thanks for that.
Full details of the grave are now with CWGC. It is likely a war stone will be erected over it, in due course.
Will update when I am notified further. _________________ Jim

Jim,
Is that subject to approval of his name being added to the register?

That is only the first step in a lengthy process.
If accepted by the Military Authority the casualty's details, as supplied by them, will be added to the Debt of Honour Roll. On acceptance CWGC them have their own procedures to implement regarding commemoration.
In this case, they will check out the burial information provided to them and, since it appears there is no family headstone with his name on it, they would seek to erect a war grave headstone. CWGC have no " rights " to do this and have a number of steps to follow in that objective. Remember, this is a private burial lair which has an owner. All of this can take some time.
If, for some reason, commemoration at Coatbridge is not be possible his name will be added to the Memorial to the Missing, at Brookwood, Surrey. _________________ Jim
