The memorial takes the form of an entrance gate into Mouswald Church and cemetery and is located on the B724 about 4 miles east of Dumfries.

JAMES R.ANDERSON, SGT. MAJ., CANADIANS.
James Roderick Anderson – age 32 – Quartermaster Sergeant (A/29001) 47th Battalion, Canadian Infantry.
James was a member of the local militia, the 104th Westminster Fusiliers of Canada, when he enlisted at New Westminster, British Columbia on 12 March 1915. He was discovered to have diabetes and was discharged from the army on 20 May 1915. He died in the family home at Brocklehirst Stables, Mouswald.
Born 1883 at Cramond in Edinburgh. Son of Duncan and Elizabeth (Knight) Anderson of Brocklehirst Stables, Mouswald and of Broomlands Lodge, Dumfries.
Died on 16 April 1916 and buried in Mouswald Parish Churchyard Extension. (CWG)
JAMES BELL, M.M. PTE., K.O.S.B.
James Bell, Military Medal – age 28 – Private (25000) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
James was resident in Ruthwell when he was posted to the 7th/8th Battalion before transferring to the 6th KOSB. He was awarded a M.M. in 1918 as 25000 Pte. J. Bell, K.O.S.B. (Ruthwell).
Born 1890 in Dalton, Dumfriesshire as James Alexander Bell.
Son of William Irving Bell and Elizabeth (Macduff) Bell.
Missing in Action on 24 March 1918 and named on the Pozieres Memorial, France.
GAVIN J. BROWN, PTE.. LANARKSHIRE YEO.
Gavin James Brown – age 25 – Private (1281) 1/1st Lanarkshire Yeomanry.
Gavin died in Beaumont Barracks, Aldershot, Farnham, Hampshire.
Born 1892 in Cummertrees, Dumfriesshire. Son of the late Gavin Brown of Flosh, Cummertrees and of Margaret (Broatch) Brown of Longdyke, Ruthwell.
Died on Service on 20 January 1916 and buried in Cummertrees Cemetery. (CWG) |
