|

Someone I was chatting to about war memorial research stumped me with a pretty innocuous question.
Which Scottish memorial has the most names on it?
I said the biggest population centres, like the cities, have no names upon them because of the great number that would be needed, in those cases roll of honour books were created (mostly) instead.
That was a half answer as I simply don't know which memorial, that lists names, has the most.
Anyone know off the top of their head? |

Not off the top of my head, but the most in this area is Dumfries
336 from WW1, 216 from WW2 and one each for Malaya, Korea and Vietnam
Total 555
For most memorials listed by UKNIWM, there is a count of names

Off the top of my head Stirling has 690+ listed.
Gala will have the most names listed in the Borders. _________________

I assumed (wrongly) all Scottish cities had no names upon their memorials, but Stirling and Inverness do. |

Coatbridge has a large number of names, by rough calculations it looks like over 750 Great War names and over 200 Second World War names.
Thanks
