Not listed on UKNIWM

Location in the present Douglas Ewart High School Building, Newton Stewart at OS Map Ref NX 407657.

This memorial is in 3 parts; an oak lectern (on the stage in the hall), a dedicated bible (in head teacher's office when I visited), and a framed list of names (currently in storage under the stage). The memorial was originally located in the previous premises of Douglas Ewart High School, Newton Stewart at OS Map Ref NX 409 657 (originally the Ewart High School). The Ewart was a boys school and after WW1 it merged with the Douglas (girls school) to become the Douglas Ewart High School. In June 1976 Douglas Ewart school moved up the road to its present premises and the memorial was moved at that time.

My thanks to Margaret Allan who arranged access and provided all the information. The framed list of names was produced by Jack Maltman, an art teacher at the school at the time.

Original location Douglas Ewart High School building (formerly Ewart High School)

Current location in Douglas Ewart High School

As usual, please PM me if you would like higher res photos.

Paul

Well done on getting another school memorial. Are there any plans to display the framed Roll?

Regards

I managed to speak to the Head Teacher and Deputy Head while I was there also Margaret Allan seems to have taken it upon herself to see if it can be put back on display. I think it was taken down when some building work was being done a couple of years ago and then never found its way back on the wall.
