My great-uncle was killed on 28/06/1915 at the Battle of Gully Ravine, Gallipoli. He is believed to be buried at Twelve Tree Copse Cemetary near where he died. I do not know if his parents had a family gravestone/memorial erected for him, or whether he is commemorated on any formal war memorial in Glasgow where people might gather in November each year. His family were living at Chislehurst, 19 Newlands Road, Glasgow then so I do not know if there are any memorials nearby. My grandmother (his younger sister) was later married at Newlands UF Church which seems to be around the corner from maps I have seen but they do not reply to letters or email so I do not know if they have a memorial there or nearby. A Imperial War Museum/Channel 4 search on his name does not receive any matches. Have you any advice etc? On all official records (CWGC and Edinburgh Castle) he is listed as D M Taylor rather than Daniel. - Thanks, Alastair Cuthbert, Cornwall.

Here is his entry from SNWM.

Surname TAYLOR
Firstname D M
Service Number
Date Death 28/06/1915
Decoration
Place of birth Glasgow
Other 7th Bn.
SNWM roll THE CAMERONIANS (SCOTTISH RIFLES)
Rank Lieut
Theatre of death Dardanelles.

He is listed in SDGW but with no further information.

He is not listed in De Ruvigny's Roll of Honour.

He was reported missing in the Glasgow Evening Times issue of 8th July 1915, page 3 together with a photograph. His name was given as D Martin Taylor.

The Glasgow Roll of Honour for WW1 is in the process of being transcribed but I cannot confirm if his name is on it. We are still missing quite a lot of church memorials from Glasgow so please check back.

Alastair

He is listed as D M Taylor as these are the details which would have been reported by the Army to CWGC and others.

Through communication with his NOK during the verification process his NOK had the opportunity to add to these for the entry in the Register, etc.
In this case they added his full name, his age and " Son of John E. Taylor, of 19, Newlands Rd., Newlands, Glasgow. "

Name: TAYLOR, DANIEL MARTIN

Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Lieutenant

Alastair

The UF Church or United Free Church merged with the Church of Scotland in 1929 and many of the UF churches in the cities changed their names. So did this one to Newlands (South) Church of Scotland.
In the last 80 years many congregations have dwindled so quite a few former UF churches have merged with other congregations however this one has stood the test of time and is now Newlands South Church of Scotland. Its website is here:

http://www.newlandschurch.org.uk/index.html

You could try phoning their office during the day to see if they have any war memorials or rolls of honour in the church or church hall.

Langside / Cathcart doesn't have a civic war memorial so if he is on memorial it will most likely be a church one.

Regards

Adam
