Has anyone got access to the April 2009 issue of the Scots Magazine?
There is an article 'An inspiring site' that mentions a survivor's surprise at finding his name on a roll of honour.
I would quite like to read it.

I see that the article starts on Page 384 and ends on page 390 and on that page it has a photo of General Sir Ian Hamilton inspecting the Black Watch guard of honour during the unveiling ceremony . I did not realise the article ended a page later on page 390 |

In the same edition of the Scots Mag there is a fascinating article about Scottish (and Irish emigrants) who had enlisted in the US army to earn the right of residence (and a guaranteed wage) but who deserted to join the Mexican army and fight against the Americans.
Many, apparently, felt a greater sympathy with the Catholic Mexicans than the (mainly) Protestant, and slave-owning, Americans regarding the annexation of Texas.
Many were killed in action and those captured were either executed or BRANDED.
There is a memorial to them in Mexico City and an annual parade in their honour led by a Mexican pipe band - that would be something to see!
They were officially known as the San Patricios (Saint Patrick's) Batallion but, due to the predominance of 'gingers' (no offence intended) in their ranks they were nicknamed Los Colorados Valientes (the Brave Redheads)
From the (ever relieable!) Wikipedia - The Saint Patrick's Battalion (San Patricios) was a group of several hundred immigrant soldiers, the majority Irish, who deserted the U.S. Army because of ill-treatment or sympathetic leanings to fellow Mexican Catholics. They joined the Mexican army. Most were killed in the Battle of Churubusco; about 100 were captured by the U.S. and roughly half were hanged as deserters.
And from 'Mexico's leading English language publication'

You couldn't make this stuff up! |
