David - Do you have a copy of Walter & Margaret's Marriage Certificate? (I'd be interested to know who his father was.)
After having a look through some Census Returns, McLay appears to be very much a Stirlingshire name.
1881 Census:
Walter McLay aged 8 months,
Living at 14 Bannockburn Road, St. Ninians (Stirling)
Son of Christina McLay.
Born at St. Ninians (Stirling) c.1880
Siblings: Jeannie (age 5) and Charles (age 3)
1891 Census:
Walter McLay aged 10,
Living at 13 Weaver Row, St. Ninians (Stirling)
Son of Christina McLay.
Born at St. Ninians (Stirling) c.1881
Siblings: Jeannie (age 15) and Charles (age 13)
Can't find him on 1901 Census

In 1901 he was serving abroad with the Argylls, so he won't be on that census. |
