Borthwick Great War Memorial
Location: Gates of Borthwick Parish Churchyard.
OS Ref: NT 368 596
The church at Borthwick sits beside Borthwick Castle Hotel and there is a small road leading to them both.
It is a lovely, quiet location for a war memorial next to the old church and castle and overlooking fields. The Second World War memorial is situated within the church.
I didn't realise how bright it was so you can't read the inscriptions on the plaques on the gates.
The left hand '1914' gate says
TO THE GLORY OF GOD
AND IN HONOUR OF ALL WHO WENT
FORTH FROM THIS PARISH TO SERVE
The '1919' gate
AND IN MEMORY OF THOSE WHO GAVE
THEIR LIVES FOR THEIR COUNTRY
IN THE GREAT WAR
