THE SCOTSMAN: 22.05.1922
MEMORIAL FOUNTAIN AT DUNDEE
Lieutenant-Colonel J.B. Muir, D.S.O., commanding 4/5th Battalion the Black Watch, on Saturday unveiled the Mains War Memorial, a fountain erected in Caird Park, Dundee. The memorial bears the names of 25 men of the parish who fell in the war. After the ceremony Baillie Gillies accepted custody of the memorial on behalf of the corporation. |

Unbelievable, no wonder you gave us a warning Mark. Does Dundee City Council have no shame
It looks like they have completely given up on this memorial. Is no one interested in this, do the RBL know this memorial exists?
At least we have a record of its existence now and can make out some of the names before it is completely destroyed.

I think I will probably write to the council about this and see what comes of it.

This is truly awful and shows that some education is needed in the local schools as well as some serious work done to make good the damage.
Not listed on UKNIWM.
I have today reported this to the conservation officer at the War Memorials Trust and hopefully they will take this up directly with the owners of the memorial. This may be the Town or Parish council.

I would suggest the corporation, and therefore the council have failed in their duty here. |

Corporation - quite right, missed that bit, thanks
I guess the Corporation turned into Dundee Council at some time?

Whoever is responsible for the upkeep of this memorial should be ashamed of themselves.
I've posted this on the Great War Forum - the more people are aware of the condition of this memorial, hopefully the bigger the outcry and perhaps something might get done.

I found out about this memorial whilst looking through Anne's spreadsheet index of memorials. It is the worst I have ever seen - such a shame.
Thanks to Paul and David for highlighting it. Very interesting to see what happens here.

Thanks for posting it there David. I have e-mailed the council leisure department head and later today I intend sending a similar e-mail to the councillors responsible for this area. I have alerted other local individuals from the Western front assoc and Great war forums in the hope that they will also add their voices.
Regards

Glad to hear someone is contacting the council etc. Thanks for posting Ian.
I'll make a post on the SMRG blog tonight regarding this memorial - not sure how many actually read the blog, but it's another avenue to get knowledge about this memorial out there.
I did a google search for this memorial and foudn nothing, so it may be that we're the first to spot that it needs urgent attention. |

Thanks for bringing this to our attention and a grim story and it shows that the Dundee City Council are not bothered ! What about contacting the Media and the Dundee Lord Provost on this very important subject too.
I heard that the Councils in the UK get money from the Central Government for maintenance of their War Memorials ? Seems if that is fact then they do little maintenance ? Should this memorial be moved to a more secure location in the Parish ........... |

Glad to see so many concerned about this. It would be great to see the memorial restored and re-dedicated - wherever that may be.
cheers,
