Always something different. Kingholm Quay near Dumfries is tiny, never had a church as far as I know, and I was convinced there was no memorial. I have driven through it, walked through it and never saw one (nothing listed on UKNIWM either). Then yesterday I was on my bicycle and used the cycle track for the first time, there - low down on the wall was this brass plaque with a protective sheet of perspex.
OS Map Ref: NX 975 737 - difficult to find, the memorial is at the end of the quay/start of the cycle track, opposite the Swan Public House.
Note that of the 8 WW1 names, 4 are McFarlane and as the inscription explains, John McFarlane and his 3 sons. If that doesn't bring a lump to your throat - you haven't thought about it I also include a photo of John McFarlane senior's grave in Dumfries.

The mention of the total family loss on the plaque is a very nice touch as, with other memorials, we sometimes have to guess at possible family links. _________________ There must be a place under the sun where hearts of olden glory grow young ..... |

Thank you for this, I didn't know it existed. James Clugston is one of the men that will be included in my book on Auchencairn in WW1. He is included in the 'Associated Roll of Honour' because most of his schooling took place at Auchencairn. The family had moved from the area before his brother, Stuart, was born. _________________ www.sonsofgalloway.org.uk

The memorial is down to be cleaned and reframed if the parish council can raise the funds. A remembrance service is held at the memorial every November - it is well attended and the local pub provides free tea and biscuits for those who attend (it is a nice place for a pub lunch too ).
A recent housing scheme has the main road named in honour of the McFarlane family and their sacrifice.

Apart from Mrs McFarlane losing her husband and three sons, her only other son, George, spent over 4 years as a prisoner of war. The following article was published in the Dumfries and Galloway Courier on 11th January 1919. Some of the wording and comments seems insensitive by today's standards.
