Can anyone with an Ancestry subscription help me out here as I think I am going mad One day last week I found the service record for LCPL James McAllister. He served with 5th KOSB where he suffered a bullet wound on his left hand in 1915 in the Dardanelles campaign and went on to develop enteric fever (recovered). Married at Barjarg Village, Auldgirth in 1916. Discharged 1917 permanently unfit because of gunshot wound. Daughter born in 1917. Mother's name was Jane.
Today I have spent an hour and a half looking for his service record (also under pension records) and I cannot find him despite looking under various combinations of name, location, date and place of birth (about 1890 in Keir). Locations could have been Penpont or Thornhill.
Can anyone save my sanity?

Wouldn't the fact that you have searched for him previously been kept in Ancestry's history?
It keeps a record of everything I have searched for. _________________

I didn't know about the history thing because I didn't have it enabled on my homepage, now that I have done it, I am no better off. I don't think it is me, I think something got screwed on the system. I have taken a screenshot and the record I want is the first one found on 11 February. When I click on it, it searches for a 'PTE FOUND' (who I have never searched for) and unsurprisingly does not come up with any record.
The record I wanted was in the first half dozen when searching for place of birth, Penpont - and if I rerun the query, it isn't!!!
I think something has gone wrong at their end, it is the only sense I can make of it.

Nope, he's not listed under Penpont.
And I can't find him doing any other search.
It's a mystery. _________________

Think he was born in Keir, Dumfriesshire and not Penpont...both his brothers born in Keir.

Yes he was born in Keir (according to the 1901 census) but it would not be unusual for a service record to show the name of the nearest town rather than the actual village.

Hi Paul,
I see from the other thread on this man that you provide some details from his service record; did you make a note of his regimental number?
I started off on the other thread and also spent about an hour searching Ancestry until I stumbled across this one saying that it was no longer to be found!

Sorry, Regimental Number is one of the things I did not note down, everything I noted at the time is on the thread.
