Now that we have been running for nearly two years there is a little of bit of forum administration to be done.

For example there are some threads out there where we need photographs. We may not have photographs of the name panels or even of the memorial itself. We may need up to date photographs as well.

Other threads might not have a location, Ordnance Survey reference or a UKNIWM entry.

We will also start adding unveiling details so if they haven’t been posted we’ll list them here.

There will probably be other things needing some attention which I haven’t thought of but will be listed here too.

We will start making up a list here covering all this area’s memorials, civic, church, regimental etc. If we come across something that will need actioned the Mods. can add it to this list. If you see something that needs updated please post in this thread and we can update the list.

I have a series of photos for the memorial at Rankinson, and so will add a posting for it sometime next week.

I had less success in nearby Drongan. But it does seem from their website that a war memorial plaque was erected in the Schaw Kirk in 1993 and I'll contact the minister to get confirmation, and further information.

The Drongan memorial is definately inside Schaw Kirk so you will need to get someone to open up if you want to photograph it.

I am not sure when I might be able to visit but I have written today to the Session Clerk so perhaps they have someone who might be able to photograph the memorial(s) for us.

The minister promised to send me a pic a few weeks ago, and I emailed him again last week to remind him, so between us we should manage to harass these poor folk into helping us!

I was at Maidens today - definately no war memorial (from the postmaster). Nearest memorial is Turnberry only half a mile away or Kirkoswald which is about a mile in the opposite direction.

On open doors day today I visited the following churches and photographed the memorials. It may take me a few weeks to sort the 350 photos and post them!

Kilbride - there is a small hamlet called Kilbride on A841 between Shannochie and Kilmory there is no memorial there. The nearest one is the one at the junction on A841 and the Ross road. We have it down as Sliddery and Kilmory. I asked around and was told that Kilbride was a parish name for the southern part of the island. So unless someone knows differently I think there is no Kilbride memorial as such.

In the Carrick Gazette today is an article about Maybole war memorials. We don't have some of them

Eight memorials In Dailly Parish Church

1. St Columba’s Free Church Roll of Honour - The framed scroll bears the names of 46 men and three women who served in the armed forces during The Great War. Nine of those named were killed in action during the war. The roll of honour has been cleaned up and repaired by church elder Jean McBride and is now on display in the parish church.

2. A stained glass window with a marble plaque on the sill, which had been inserted in the free church by Eugene Wason of Blair MP and his wife on the safe return of their son Rigby from the war in South Africa where he served with the City Imperial Volunteers.

3. A memorial naming the nine members of St Columba’s Free Church who died in the Great War

All three St Columba's memorials are together again on display in time for the commemoration of the start of the war.

4. An alter cross displayed on the communion table which was gifted in 1919 by the Inglis family in memory of their sons, one killed during the Boer War and three others during WWI.

5. Two vases presented by the same Inglis family in 1916 commemorate two of their sons killed during the Great War.

6. Again the same family placed a marble plaque in the church in memory of their son Alexander Inglis, aged 24 years, Captain 2nd Regiment Scottish Horse, who was killed in action in South Africa on October 30, 1901 ‘Whilst gallantly leading his squadron’.

7. Alongside this memorial plaque is a WWI temporary battlefield burial cross removed from Dailly cemetary in October 1997 for safe keeping. This cross was brought from a battlefield in France where it was used as a temporary grave marker for Lieutenant R. Inglis MC prior to his being reinterred in one of the many Commonwealth war cemeteries.

8. Behind the pulpit of the church there are seven wooden panels bearing the names of 42 members of the congregation who died during WW1, and three other panels bear the names of 13 members of the congregation who died during WW2.

Memorial Garden

The village of Dailly has one other war memorial which is nowadays sometimes forgotten. After WWII the Bargany family gifted a piece of ground to be known as the Memorial Garden in honour of those who did not return from WWII.

Opposite the primary school was a low lying area which would have made a good sunken garden but Girvan District Council, the ruling authority at that time, in consultation with the people of Dailly decided to fill in the area and turf it as a sports field, to be known as Memorial Park.

A suitable plaque showing the park’s name and background is long overdue.
