I don't know if it is the same man. Tramways and Railways were different. Kilmarnock had a tramway between 1904-1926 and the way the obit. reads it is this Kilmarnock Trams company he worked for.

There were only 2 James McGenn listed on the 1901 census in Scotland and they were father and son both living at 2 West George St, Kilmarnock. James senior (born in Mochrum) had an estimated birth year of 1869 and was a Gas Work Labourer - his wife Annie was 18 years his senior.
James junior had an estimated birth year of 1889 and was born in Girvan. You should be able to confirm his employment from the 1911 census when it is released in 2011.

Hello Paul,
This is indeed my McGenn family. Luckily for me, it's not a very common name. In my research so far, there was only one James McGenn killed in action in WW1.
And, I am very lucky in that his CWGC listing lists his wife's name and even his address in Glagow.
As far as the railway memorial is concerned, based on other evidence as well, I think that it is extremely likely that it is my James McGenn listed, but I will continue to research to confirm.
Many thanks for your generous efforts. I am very grateful.
Regards,
Georgia |
