Purves , J . P.O. , Labourer

Named on the Ayton Parish War Memorial in Berwickshire as:

JAMES PURVIS, M.M.
Note: all records show the family name as name as Purves
James Purves, Military Medal age 37 Petty Officer (Clyde Z/1659) Drake Battalion, Royal Naval Division, Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve.
James was employed as a plumber's helper by the North British Railway Company in Glasgow and was living at Elmvale Street, Springburn when he enlisted in October 1914. He joined the Howe Battalion of the Royal Naval Division at Gallipoli in July 1915 but due to illness he was evacuated home in November. He rejoined the battalion in France in May 1917 but was wounded and evacuated home in July. James was posted to Drake Battalion in France in April 1918 but he was killed five months later. During this time he was awarded a M.M.
Born 1882 in Ayton. Son of Margaret Ford Purves of Garage House, Ayton.
Killed in Action on 30 September 1918 and buried in Moeuvres Communal Cemetery Extension, France.

Scrambler , J . Private , Surfaceman

JAMES SCAMBLER
James Scambler age 34 Private (9395) 2nd Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
James was a foreman surfaceman with the North British Railway Company when as a reservist he was mobilised in August 1914 and he joined his battalion in France on 21 August.. James was killed during the battle of Loos.
Born 1880 in Innerwick, East Lothian. Son of Richard and Janet (Litster) Scambler of Branxton, Innerwick. Husband of Elizabeth (Manderson) Scambler of Bilsdean, Oldhamstocks near Cockburnspath, Berwickshire who he married in 1911 in Olhamstocks, East Lothian.
Killed in Action on 25 September 1915 and buried in Cambrin Churchyard Extension, France.
Also named on the Innerwick Parish, the Oldhamstocks Parish and the Cockburnspath Parish War Memorials.

Hogg , P . Private , Surfaceman

Named on the Dunbar Burgh and Parish War Memorial as:

PETER HOGG

Peter Hogg age 28 Private (325193) 1/8th Battalion, Royal Scots.
Peter was a surfaceman with the North British Railway Company at East Barns, Dunbar when he enlisted in the local Territorial 8th Royal Scots in March 1914. He was mobilised in August 1914 and as Private (1006) he landed with the 1/8th Battalion at Le Havre in November 1914.
Born December 1889 at Bowshiel in Grantshouse, Cockburnspath, Berwickshire as Paterson Hogg. Son of Ebenezer and Helen (Hunter) Hogg of East Barns, Dunbar and of Abby Farm, North Berwick.
Missing in Action on 22 July 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.
