My forays around the churches halls and byways of Berwickshire took me over to Edrom Parish Church earlier. Here there's a framed roll but also a recently found unframed one. Seems the latter was used once the former was full-up, but no-one ever got around to mounting it.
On the second, a few casualties are noted in red ink.

Learmonth, J - Seaforth Highlanders - Killed in Action 9/4/1915
Blacklock, J - Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders - Killed in Action 15th July 1916
Swanson, George - Black Watch - Killed in Action July 1917
Blaikie, Robert - Black Watch - Killed in Action May 1917
Hunter, JA - KOSB - Killed in Action 1917
4 are among the 46 on Edrom civic memorial, although Blacklock appears on it as with the Gordon Highlanders - the exception being JA Hunter, who is on the civic memorial in neighbouring Chirnside parish. |

Blacklock, J - Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders - Killed in Action 15th July 1916
John Blacklock – age 22 – Private (S/11759) 1st Battalion, Gordon Highlanders.
John was a policeman in Edinburgh when he enlisted in the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders in October 1915. He was posted to the 1st Gordons in France in March 1916 but he was killed four months later on the Somme.
Born 1893 in Wilton, Hawick, Roxburghshire. Son of John and Ellen Jane (Scott) Blacklock of Craigswalk, Edrom.
Missing in Action on 15 July 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.
Blaikie, Robert - Black Watch - Killed in Action May 1917
Robert Blaikie – age 31 – Private (S/7362) 8th Battalion, Black Watch (Royal Highlanders)
In 1911 the Blaikie family were at Newcastle-upon-Tyne where Robert worked in his father's carting business. He enlisted at Swinton, Berwickshire in December 1914 and landed with the 10th Black Watch at Boulogne in September 1915 but two months later they sailed from Marseilles and landed at Salonika in northern Greece. Robert returned to France and joined the 8th Battalion but he was killed near Arras and buried in St. Laurent-Blangy Communal Cemetery Extension. He was re-interred after the war.
Born 1886 in Chirnside, Berwickshire. Son of James and Elizabeth (Ballantyne) Blaikie of Kelloe Mains, Edrom.
Killed in Action on 9 April 1917 and buried in Cabaret-Rouge British Cemetery, Souchez, France.
Learmonth, J - Seaforth Highlanders - Killed in Action 9/4/1915
Note: The family name varies between Learmonth and Learmouth from record to record.
Joseph Christopher Learmouth – age 30 – Private (1230) 2nd Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders.
Joseph was a farm servant in the Edrom. Chirnside and Reston areas for a number of years but he was employed by the North British Railway Company when he enlisted in 1912. He landed with his battalion at Boulogne in August 1914 and fought at Mons, the Marne and the Aisne where he was wounded and evacuated home. After he had recovered he rejoined his battalion in January 1915 but he was killed at St Julien near Ypres.
Born 1885 in Coldingham, Berwickshire as Christopher Joseph Learmonth.
Son of Jane Learmonth.
In 1891 he was living as Joseph with his grandmother Christina Learmouth and other family members, including his mother Jane, at Hutton, Berwickshire and in 1901 as Joseph C. Learmouth, born Coldingham, he was still with his grandmother Christina at Cockburnspath, Berwickshire.
Killed in Action on 25 April 1915 and buried in Seaforth Cemetery, Cheddar Villa, Belgium.
Swanson, George - Black Watch - Killed in Action July 1917
George Swanston – age 22 – Private (58834) 227th Company, Machine Gun Corps.
George enlisted under the Derby scheme and was mobilised as Private (4761) in the Black Watch in the summer of 1916. He was posted to the MGC in France in June 1917 but he was killed during an air raid a month later.
Born 1895 at Chirnside Station, Berwickshire. Son of George and Mary (Anderson) Swanston of Chirnside Bridge, Edrom.
Killed in Action on 27 July 1917 and buried in Canada Farm Cemetery, Belgium. _________________ Ken |

Hunter, JA - KOSB - Killed in Action 1917
John Alexander Hunter – age 31 – Private (201558) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
John was a farm servant at Chirnside Mill Farm when he enlisted as Private (8674) in July 1916. He joined his battalion in Egypt in January 1917 and served in Palestine where he was severely wounded at Gaza. John was evacuated to hospital in Alexandria where he died.
Born 1886 in Chirnside. Son of John and Jane (Thomson) Hunter, of Chirnside. Husband of Helen (Mabon) Hunter Naismith's Buildings of Pinefield Cottage, Chirnside who he married in 1915 in Edinburgh.
Died of Wounds on 27 April 1917 and buried in Alexandria (Hadra) War Memorial Cemetery, Egypt. _________________ Ken |
