Matthew White Halley appears on both Partick Church and Hillhead High School War Memorials alongside his brother, James Mitchell Halley.
The School's Roll of Honour book provides a good bit of information about him, saying he was a well-known figure at the University [Glasgow, I assume]. After graduation he took a job in India and joined a Scottish Volunteer regiment there. When war broke out he applied for a commission and was gazetted as a Lieutenant in the Indian Army. However he caught Blackwater Fever and died on 19 November 1914 at Moguk, Upper Burmah, aged 35.
To add to the mystery, Ken Morrison has found a Matthew White Halley mentioned in the London Gazette (24/7/1917) as receiving a commission on 27 November 1915.
So, I'm a bit nonplussed. Can anyone help nonplus me? |
